Product Description

Product Description

The grape-like, purple Açaí berry grows in Brazil's Amazonian rainforest, where it has long been embraced by the local people for it's distinctive taste. A rich source of omega fats and amino acids, it's a welcome addition to anyone's daily diet. Blend into juices, smoothies and raw energy bars, or simply add to water to rehydrate for an authentic taste of Brazil. Our Açaí is grown on the banks of the Amazon where the berry bearing palms thrive on the rich fertile soil; when ripe the antioxidant rich berries are pulped and freeze-dried into a vibrant purple powder.

I don't know if it is placebo effect from knowing that I am consuming a more nutritious diet (paleo lite with lots of fruit, nuts, seeds, eggs and vegetables) but after eating a tablespoon of Maca powder in my porridge and muesli every morning for several weeks, I noticed that I now have a lot more energy and stamina when riding my mountain bike and have an increased feeling of general well being, is it down to the Maca powder? I can't say for sure but I am on my third pack of it now and will be buying another one when that is finished.....

I'm not the biggest fan of the taste but that's a very good, quality product. I mix it with orange juice & it's not bad. Would recommend!

Okay, let's clear one thing up before we go on: maca root smells and tastes...bad! It has a potent vegetable smell - imagine drinking slightly stale, pungent, concentrated parsnip juice.

Now, let me say this: maca root is a vegetable. It smells like a veg, it tastes like a veg, so I wouldn't go sprinkling it on your fruit or putting it in your cereal - unless you like vegetables in your cereal :-/

Right! Let's skip to the effects, but just before I do, let me tell you how I've been taking maca root. The first three occasions, I sprinkled it into my cereal...not good! The next few times, I tried stirring it into cold water and downing in one...gave me stomach ache. So, what did I end up doing - I ended up buying gel caps and shoveling the stuff into the caps with a plastic drinking straw. Sorry, but I can't eat, drink, or taste that powder...it's not for me.

Okey dokey, where were we. Right, the dose! A TABLESPOON?? You've got to be kidding me! I've found that half a TEASPOON in the morning with food and half a teaspoon with dinner in the evening is plenty! I've gel-capped mine, so I swallow two size 0 gel caps in the morn, 2 in the eve.

If I take more than a teaspoon in the morning it makes me aggressive, or very emotional. It messes with the hormones! The effects may differ with each person but this is one VERY IMPORTANT thing to remember with maca root: experiment with dosage! Everyone is different. Take up to two weeks trying different dosage levels and see how you feel. Like I said, I've settled with a teaspoon each day - half morning, half evening.

There is no mention on the packaging of the importance of taking regular breaks from your maca routine.

First time, I dumped a table spoon onto my porridge - disgusting. This is how to take it: you get a shaker put some skimmed milk in, add the maca (I put a teaspoon or two), add a teaspoon of cacao and a squirt of agave syrup. Shake. Drink. It's pretty tasty!

Benefits wise - I feel it works. At first I was bouncing off the walls with a soup spoon of it every morning. It definitely regulates hormones and gives you a tonne of energy. I highly recommend it.

Maca powder is one of those foodstuffs akin to Marmite - it can be either loved or hated and is probably for an acquired taste. In my case, I started off hating it but after some research and experience with consumption, I now like it. I use it as part of my pre-workout regime at the gym if I haven't had enough time to eat something solid and it does help - along with raw coffee beans - to maintain my energy levels as well as alertness. Additionally, it did help at one point to rebalance me after a lengthy spell of stress, which affected my hormones.

However, as with everything in life, this stuff needs to be taken in moderation. As it acts on the endocrine system, I would recommend one consumes two TEAspoons in one day maximum and discourage every day use. Space the consumption out. Additionally, don't take this if you take any other medication, particularly any ones dealing with hormonal quirks. Always consult a doctor before considering this.

Furthermore, what the packaging doesn't tell you is that this is RAW maca powder. From the scattered information I read about this, not only is this form not recommended for direct consumption but also it explains the bad taste many complain about. Think of lingering raw, bitter parsnip and that is what this will taste like straight from the bag. To make it more palatable, the powder should be roasted for 7-10 minutes in the oven on a low heat (Gas Mark 2 recommended) so as not to lose the nutrients - it will brown and taste sweeter, more dulcet and closer to the 'malt' or 'butterscotch' claims commonly ascribed to it.
