What a disappointing collection from such a great selection of names. I was expecting a more layman's dip in treasury of nature stories, rather than the enthusiasts guide to wildlife. Short pieces written by various names including Bill Oddie, Charles Darwin, Gavin Maxwell, MArk Cocker, John Lister Kaye which span a couple of hundred years, but it's on the heavy side with sections that are more like magazine articles for learned and enthusiasts wildlife magazines than a curl up and dip in book. There are sections entitled "Hoverfly", "Ravens", "Gold crested wren" and others about areas such as "Islay", "A Welsh farm", "Gordale Scar" etc, some more readable than others. There's no doubting the enthusiasm of the writer. Forward by Sir David Attenborough there are also one or two names I think are missing such as Mark Carwardine, Ian Wallace, Sir Peter Scott, absolutely no poetry!!!! and Gerald Durrell (but of course his wasn't British wildlife. Wait for the paperback if you really want it.
