Review

A very accessible guide to the wonders of nature on our doorsteps, from Lichens, reptiles, insects and butterflies to birds and their songs and animals and their pawprints. If your memories of school biology classes are a little hazy, this handy, illustrated book will guide you through naming trees, spotting edible berries, even understanding the seasons, tides and the phases of the moon. --Choice Magazine, October 2009

Product Description

There is so much to know about the ever changing natural world, but it's impossible to remember everything we have ever learnt about the range of subjects encompassed by the term 'nature'. "The Nature Book" is a great guide to the natural world, both for the beginner and those who want to relearn the most important and interesting facts about our fascinating environment, including: identifying rock formations; names of berries; flora and fauna; phases of the moon; the seasons; seas and rivers; and, birds and other wildlife. Comprehensive, yet accessible and entertaining, whether you're a walker who would like to be able to 'name that tree' or simply a gardener who wants to know more, "The Nature Book" is your one-stop guide to reconnecting and appreciating nature once more.

This review is from: The Nature Book: What It Is and How It Lives (Hardcover)
This is a great little book. It bypasses the partitions into which the natural world is so often divided (field guides to birds etc) by chucking in a potpourri of anything that has ever made you stop and wonder - from mad march hares to stickleback nests and seed dispersal to phases of the moon. For such a small volume it covers an awful lot. But it does it all with an engaging lightness of touch and enthusiasm, the author's feel for the natural world also coming across in her delightful line drawings. I expected to find this a book to dip into for choice snippets - which I'm sure is what the publisher intended - but instead found myself reading it from cover to cover. In the process I learned just how much I didn't know, much of it embarrassingly basic. The book also has great practical value: simple tables and diagrams help you identify trees from their leaves and mammals from their tracks, while information boxes offer punchy explanations of everything from bird song to taxonomy. Deserves a place in every backpack, glove compartment and holiday cottage.
