Product Description

Six breathtaking episodes from the BBC's multi award-winning series.

On the Trail of Tarka

The magic of the classic novel Tarka the Otter survives today. But how have the otters fared since 1927? This film contrasts the dramatic events of the novel with the reality of a modern otter's life.

Eye for an Elephant
From secretive elephants deep in the Congo to a female elephant giving birth at night, Martyn Colbeck has filmed the most astonishing images of these magnificent creatures ever seen.

The Bear Man of Kamchatka
Charlie Russell has devoted his life to the grizzly bears of the Kamchatka Peninsula. His last bears were brutally slaughtered - but back with four new cubs, he’s determined these will survive.

Buddha, Bees & the Giant Hornet Queen
Armed with razor-sharp jaws, thick armour plating and a lethal stinger, Japanese giant hornets are merciless killers. But with extraordinary, high-risk tactics, the humble honeybee is about to fight back.

Invasion of the Crocodiles
From hundreds of miles out at sea to remote lakes, Australia’s salt-water crocodiles are seeking new territories - to devastating effect. An action packed, revelatory insight into one of nature's most awesome reptiles.

Wye - Voices from the Valley
From the mountain tops of mid Wales to the wide open spaces of the estuary, our guides to the Wye Valley are four people whose livelihoods depend on the rhythms of changing season and weather.

Synopsis

Originally conceived as The World About Us" by Sir David Attenborough back in 1967, the series has remained popular ever since. This specially compiled selection features six episodes: ‘"On The Trail Of Tarka"’ delves into the world of Britain’s otters; ‘"The Bear Man Of Kamchatka"’ examines a group of orphaned bears returning to their natural habitat; "‘An Eye For An Elephant’" profiles the sensitivity and intelligence of the world’s largest land mammals; ‘"Wye:– The Voices From The Valley’" is a portrait of the animals and people living in the Welsh valley; "‘Invasion Of The Crocodiles"’ brings you face to face with the most awesome of predators and ‘"Buddha, Bees And The Giant Hornet Queen"’ details the life of the Japanese giant hornet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Otterly magnificent 10 Mar 2008
The Natural World has long been one of the jewels in the crown of the BBC Natural History Unit's output. And this selection of episodes is, if you like, the koh-i-nor diamond in that crown. We particularly enjoyed The Wye and Trail of Tarka episode - both beautifully filmed and sensitively narrated; and the Elephant Man which is something else and a real insight into these large and complex creatures. More, please!

5.0 out of 5 stars BBC Natural World Collection 7 Feb 2008
Six really fascinating episodes from the series, but the two that really shine are On The Trail of Tarka and Wye - Voices from the Valley, both filmed by Charlie Hamilton James with Phiippa Forrester. Just the most stunning and atmospheric photography - every shot constructed with enormous planning, thought and creativity. Something that can be repeatedly watched with new revelations on every viewing. I know there are more subjects that have been filmed by this team, a wonderful programme on Kingfishers for example. Please please BBC give us more from this imaginative yet sensitive genius.

Fantastic on-going BBC series of Natural World presentations. This collection of 6 of the more recent epsisodes is beautifully produced and presented. They all share the wonder of the natural world but are all so different in the way they present this to the viewer.

My personel favourite is the Invasion Of The Crocodiles for the sheer specticle of these ancient reptiles, yet the intriguing tale of the Buddha, Bees And The Giant Hornet Queen, with it's year long look at the life of the Japanese Giant Hornet and it's interactions with a buddhist bee keeper was just as intresting and well presented.

A fantastic little collection, a must have for any Naturalist.
