Superficial and poorly written: a rip-off for the vulnerable,
By Britgrrl (London UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Natural Solutions to Infertility: How to Increase Your Chances of Conceiving and Preventing Miscarriage (Paperback)
I was deeply disappointed in this book. I bought it based on the reviews I'd read here, and read it as soon as it arrived. It told me nothing I didn't already know from other reading and basic internet research, and while it promised a "detailed four month plan to improve your health before conception" that detailed plan was written on less than one page (!) and simply suggested taking supplements (detailed elsewhere in the book) and not eating non-organic food - something that is extensively and more effectively written about elsewhere. The book contains very little about how to use exercise and mediation to deal with the stress of trying to conceive, is very unclear on explanations of possible problems you may be experiencing, and provides extremely superficial content on chinese herbs which would have been better left out entirely as if anyone tried to self-medicate based on the information provided here they could get themselves into serious trouble. I would strongly recommend that you buy an alternative. A combination of "taking control of your fertility" by Toni Wechsler and "fertility and conception" by Zita West would do the job of this book much more effectively. If you want to deal specifically with issues when you cannot conceive (which both these do touch on), then you might want to add "the infertility cure" which talks about chinese medicine, and/or a book on meditation such as those by Alice Domar and/or "yoga for fertility". This will provide a much more helpful, less patronising selection for your bookshelf.

Don't Bother With This One,
By A Customer
This review is from: Natural Solutions to Infertility: How to Increase Your Chances of Conceiving and Preventing Miscarriage (Paperback)
If you are trolling Amazon looking to educate yourself about infertility, don't put this in your cart. Marilyn Glenville trades on the current climate of fear and lists hundreds of things that may or may not cause infertility. The only certain thing is that you will be scared to eat anything or do anything or go anywhere if you read this book. So don't. I appreciate that organic-food-vitamin-supplement types usually adhere to their views as articles of faith, but the rest of us would like some backing besides a few meager 1950's studies. You can learn what she tells you about diet, vitamins and supplements from any one of a dozen websites committed to fertility. Her detail is sparse and she - unforgivably- tries to bully you into lifestyle changes without concommitant medical proof. Buy Toni Wechsler's book if you are looking for facts on the physical elements of conceiving or Niravi Payne's book if you are searching for the spiritual elements. And good luck.

I haven't read this book but my wife has.
We had been trying for children for four years and had three depressing experiences of failed IVF. At forty things were looking bleak. Then when we started following the advice in this book things began to change. Eating organic vegetables, taking vitamin supplements and cutting out unhealthy things such as booze and chocolate had immediate benefits to our energy levels and moods. Next my wife became pregnant. Unfortunately it turned out to be an ectopic pregnancy. Only six months later and we had another result - only this turned out to be a miscarriage. Finally four months after that we had our latest and so far at 26 weeks successful pregnancy. I am now being inundated with information requests from friends and family who want to know how we have managed this after so many years. So here I am - finding the link to send them. I know that Marlyns book does not contain any startling new revelations about how to improve your fertility - in fact its a damn hard slog. Her book is ( according to the Missus ) well written, thorough and practical. Also, from the book you can find information about all the vitamin supplements you may need if you have depleted them through years of bad diet. I know I sound like I'm being paid to write this, but I am excited at the prospect of being a dad and grateful that we found this book.
