I came across this book in a bookshop so I bought it without giving it too much thought because I wanted more information about the menopause. I do believe one can better be well informed about what can happen and how to handle it so this was my first approach to the subject. Still..... I didn't manage to agree with a lot written in this book. It does cover a lot of ground in a few pages which is good as many health books repeat too much the same subjects just to fill space but the ideas of the author are quite outdated if you ask me. This book must be a newer version of one published in the nineties with the same title and it is starting to show the age. Her fear for saturated fats, her love for soya (as far as I know you shouldn't touch any soya products that are not fermented), her advice to eat a diet high in carbohydrates and fibers, low in protein and fats those are very outdated concepts. Avoid the sun.... another advice which has been abandoned by now. Her fear of cholesterol also shows this is an older book as well as her love for vegetable oils which seem to be quite harmful. The concept of taking half of the quantity of magnesium as of calcium I am not sure it is correct either! Her ideas of bad food include chocolate, beer and wine which I am not sure are bad at all if taken in reasonable quantities. She also advises artificial sweeteners. Although she doesn't mention which ones and there are indeed harmless ones people might think that she is talking about aspartame or saccharine for example, which are not at all good for you! All the rest is more or less common sense with some information about vitamins and minerals, a chapter about natural therapies and some information about massage.
I think that when a book is an updated version of another one it should always be mentioned but this one, I believe, is probably just a new edition of an older book and that they never tell you so you think that you are buying something up to date when in fact it is not at all so!
That said.... if you like her ideas and want to know more about the menopause in an easy to read style, want some exercises to keep you going.... this might be the book for you! Why she includes information about birth control for example is not clear to me because at my age most people either don't need it anymore or else know everything there is to know about it anyway! All in all this is the kind of book which didn't manage to keep me interested till the end!
