Book Description

20 Sep 2012
This wonderful collection of 200 traditional recipes brings you the best of British country cooking. There are mouth-watering recipes for every occasion, from soups, starters and light meals to hearty stews and pies, delicious puddings and teatime treats to fruity jams and spicy chutneys. The rhythms of rural life influenced country meals and dishes and led to tasty slow-cooked stews and hotpots and the rituals of baking bread, cakes and pies. There is a balance of classic 'good plain cooking' and rich, well-seasoned dishes often rooted in a particular region and focusing on local ingredients. Choose from time-honoured family favourites such as Slow Roast Belly Pork with Root Vegetables, Shepherd's Pie, Apple Cake and Bakewell Pudding, or discover lesser-known regional country gems like Cornish Fish Pie, traditional Welsh Stew or Cumberland Girdle Cakes.

4.0 out of 5 stars A lovely book but let down by Amazon 10 Oct 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Following the style of other National Trust cookery books, this is full of traditional recipes well laid out in excellent print and paper quality which makes reading whilst preparing a lot easier. The vast majority of recipes have pictures of the finished dish. Some lovely recipes and good old favourites

The only negative for me was the hardback quality as supplied by Amazon. The first copy I received was severely marked and was returned. The second arrived and although it was not marked as badly. I decided to keep it to avoid yet more hassle of returning it. as I suspect the whole batch was probably faulty. So a note to Amazon - selling books as new means that they should be exactly that

5.0 out of 5 stars great recipes 2 Jun 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
saw this book a few weeks before in a National Trust shop and really liked the look of the recipes( I enjoy cooking !!) and wished later that I had bought it. Saw it on Amazon and it was easier, and cheaper, than going about 40 miles
back to the shop so immediately ordered it and cannot fault it. A really good buy with excellent recipes which are easy to follow

4.0 out of 5 stars Double check the index! 9 Jun 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I bought this in a hurry, after a quick scan of the index but on closer viewing see that several are entered under different headings- quite helpful but less recipes than I first thought. Having said that, my sister is pleased with it. I have the National Trust's 'Complete Traditional Recipes' (brown cover) and think, comparing the two that it is more useful for everyday cooking than this one.
