Product Description

Product Description

The National Short Story Prize is a major annual award designed to honour Britain's finest short story writers and to re-establish the importance of the short story as a central literary form. It is part of a wider campaign to build the profile, prestige and presence of the short story in our culture after many years of neglect. The panel of judges includes authors Monica Ali and A S Byatt, Radio 4 commissioning editor Di Speirs, writer and broadcaster Mark Lawson, and Prospect commissioning editor Alexander Linklater, who also introduces the collection.

About the Author

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 Good stories out of 5 is actually very poor, 24 Sep 2007
This review is from: The National Short Story Prize (Short Stories) (Paperback)
The authors shown on the Amazon jacket are incorrect, they are; David Almond, Julian Gough, Jonathan Falla, Jackie Kay and Hanif Kureishi (not in order). The premise of the prize is that short-stories are often the poor relation of the book world and the prize is to bring them to the fore. Given that this is open to professional authors only the 5 chosen stories do not help improve the impression of the short story genre in my opinion. In fairness 3 are not bad (1, 3 and 5 in sequence) and the winner is definately the best (3), but if these are the five best short stories in the UK then there isn't a great deal of hope for this format and I'd recommend staying away.
