Product Description

The BBC National Short Story Award is one of the largest awards for a single short story, with the winning author receiving GBP15,000. The shortlist of five leading authors will be announced on Radio 4's Front Row programme on November 27th 2009 and each of the five short-listed stories will then be broadcast during a week-long celebration of the short story on Radio 4. The winner will be announced by singer-songwriter Will Young at an awards ceremony on 7th December, to be covered live on the Front Row and News 24 that evening: expect noisy media coverage. This year's panel of judges will be: singer-songwriter Will Young, broadcaster and journalist Tom Sutcliffe, author Dame Margaret Drabble, Orange Prize winner Helen Dunmore and BBC Radio 4's editor Di Speirs.

Five stories

Other people's Gods - excellent short story about idols
The Not-Dead and the Saved - fantastically written story about mother and dying son
Moss Witch - unimpressive, oddly highlighted as one of the few pieces of magical realism one of the judges appreciates (see the short stories of Haruki Murakami or Gabriel Garcia Marquez for some outstanding magical realism)
Hitting Trees with Sticks - a story about forgetfulness, itself forgetable; though I imagine could be poignant for some
Exchange rates - great story about father-son relationship
