5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo Erin Soros!, 21 Mar 2010

A Reader (North West England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: BBC National Short Story Award (Short Stories) (Paperback)
I'm working my way through all the BBC National Short Story Award Collections and I think this collection, as a whole, is the best one I've read so far (although I still have 2009's to go).

Richard Beard's one was a clever take on what seems to be the common problem of infidelity in politicians; Jane Gardam's was a story about the remains of a dying era and was as poignant as it was funny; Adam Thorpe's was a very well structured coming-of-age tale; Clare Wigfall's story was about a little-educated woman from a Scottish island who was obsessed with numbers; while Erin Soros's was a riveting tale set in war-time America. I know that this is a matter of taste, but if I had been a judge Ms Soros would have won. I've read many short stories and this is one of the best I've ever read. The voice was consistent and convincing, the twists were entirely plausible and the tension of the middle section incredibly well done. There were no over-dramatic and unrealistically shocking scenes and it also had a perfect ending. Thank you Ms Soros, I look forward to reading more of your work.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read, 12 July 2009

This review is from: BBC National Short Story Award (Short Stories) (Paperback)
All the stories have been written by published writers and it is interesting to see the content which is considered prize winning. Richard Beard's Guidelines - I am sure this is a very clever dig at our ruling parties and their incredible, money wasting stupidity. I think it is too long and I ddn't have the patience to finish it. The remaining stories I have read, at least twice to try and learn how the experts do it. The styles are growing on me.
