More About the Author

My love of travelling first distilled within me before I had never even left my native Scotland. My Dad used to take me down to Princes Street Gardens where I would gaze at the trains rumbling in and out of Edinburgh Waverley. During school holidays I was spirited off to the Scottish islands and weaned on stories of my Dad's adventures in the yacht he built himself: Sisu. It was not until 1986 that I made it abroad and until 1992 that I flew for the first time, but since then I have made up for it with 500+ trips to over 80 countries.

My travel-writing career kicked off in 1997 when, with the help of a local enterprise grant, I started my business. In 1999 I moved to London where for four years I built up my contacts and markets in a city that quickly became one giant departure lounge for me with 20+ trips a year to destinations all over the world. In 2003 I moved back north and set-up a new base on the outskirts of Edinburgh, handy for both international forays and domestic trips around Scotland, a country that still remains my favourite on the planet.

In over a decade of travels I have savoured many of those 'once in a lifetime' trips - from snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef and walking on safari with big game in South Africa, through to riding the legendary Trans-Siberian Express across Asia and circling the globe in one trip, but I still enjoy every new experience with the same passion and sense of romance I used to watch those trains with as a boy.

Scotland beckons... 9 April 2014
By D.S.Thurlow - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Scotland is home to some of the best wild scenery in the British Isles, and to the romance of a half-real, half-remembered Scottish cultural tradition. Visitors will find plenty of tartans and shortbread, but also fine whisky, good museums and castles, and better opportunities for outdoor recreation (weather permitting). Scotland is a wonderful vacation destination, offering an invigorating climate, dramatic landscapes, and its own very decent and underestimated cuisine.

This National Geographic Traveler guide to Scotland is a very readable mixture of travel narrative, useful information, and some terrific photography, well suited to the first-time visitor. The approach is geographic, with an introduction to Scotland and chapters devoted to the major cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, followed by a tour of the major regions, from the borders to the highlands and islands. The last chapter talks to the practicalities of how to get around, where to stay, and what to eat.

The book includes a number of small maps, including sketch maps of major cities and towns. Those who self-drive will want a more detailed road atlas. The text includes a number of special featurettes and recommendations for each region, and of course the photography is first rate. This guide does a good job hitting the major highlights, with good recommendations for first time visitors. The selections might be a little thin for those travlers past their first visit to Scotland. Recommended as a planning and touring resource.

Travel Guide 15 Dec. 2013
By Karen A. Walker - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Good content and advice for a traveler, but WAY too small print for my middle-aged eyes. It was better for planning the trip than for use on the trip, which did achieve most of my purpose in buying it.
