3.0 out of 5 stars Hard to put together, 23 Oct 2008

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
Having a class of 8 to 11 year olds (years 5 and 6 predominantly) I thought that this would be a perfect educational 'toy' for the classroom.

I produced it this afternoon, together with the similar model of the skull, and set a group of children the task of trying to put it together.

Great discussion ensued - but 20 minutes later, it had still not been completed and had to be put back in the box to be finished later.

The children's reactions - they all felt that it was rather small, and very hard to put together. There were parts that even I, as an adult, found tricky. It was also confusing that some parts came already fixed together - but had to be 'unfixed' in order to follow their part numbers and to follow the instructions properly!

Also I have to say that, once completed, will it be easy to take into parts and study; or will it have to stay whole? And how long will it last in an average classroom?
Also, I'm not sure whether it would sustain the interest of an individual child over any period of time - unless they had a real scientific bent, or desperately wanted to become a doctor!!!

Basically, it's an intriguing and educational 3D jigsaw puzzle - and a little disappointing in the long run. I would have preferred something a little more solid and somewhat easier to put together.

1.0 out of 5 stars a wasted (and expensive) opportunity, 22 Oct 2008

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
Much like the skull in the same series this model of the heart is too small and fiddly to be of much educational value. most of what i said about the skull applies here,

In addition, i was dissappointed to see the instructions which give very little anatomical explanation, and what is there is poorly done. In fact it actually begins with an error "Whenever you hear the term cardiovascular it will refer to the heart..." well sorry but the term refers to the whole cardio (heart)and vascular (blood vessel) system.

This could have been a genuinely worthwhile educational toy. But this overpriced little nub of plastic certainly ain't

3.0 out of 5 stars Broken Hearted, 20 Nov 2008
By ratstails "ratstails" (North Shields, UK) - See all my reviews
Durability:2.0 out of 5 stars Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
This is rather a strange "toy". It gives the impression that the heart is built from small hard units rather than being one muscular organ. The pieces are fiddly and garishly coloured. I felt a sense of disappointment on completion (which took all of a minute) that it didn't do anything, so I packed it back into the box and passed mine onto the science department at the school where I teach. This coincided with a lesson where the class were dissecting a real heart and I can assure you that the real version captivated the class of 12/13 year olds and held a greater fascination, fun and educational value than a few pieces of plastic. The model lay on the teacher's desk, untouched.

If the heart had been made from rubber and could pump water, then this may be a desirable toy. Education-wise, children now have access to so much rich information over the internet, that this is a poor alternative.

The biggest problem with this is that it is too small, which makes it a bit fiddly. It would be better if it was about twice the size, or at least life size, which it is not. Read more
