My daughter had this for Christmas, after seeing it in a Toyshop, and going on about how fun it would be to find buried treasure..... well good luck, it struggles to find anything less than 1/2 inch away on carpet, let alone buried in something.
I chucked some coins on the lawn for her to find, and it struggled to find those unless you drop the dectector right on top of the coin.
(in fact we still can't find some of them!)
Poor, poor, poor - I wish I had returned it as not fit for purpose, espescially as its [...], not a cheap toy really...
I'm surprised as you expect the National Geographic brand to be a quality brand..... wrong!

I bought this for my daughters birthday present, she had asked for a metal detector and I thought this should be good because of the name behind it. I was wrong, we braved the elements and went down to the beach only to be dissapointed. It couldn't find a £2 coin under a few grains of sand.

We bought this hoping that the endorsement by National Geographic would mean it was worthwhile. We were wrong! Absolute rubbish. It looks okay and has a good instruction manual, but couldn't detect a coin placed on the grass let alone one that was buried. We were very dissappointed and took it back for a refund.

The metal detector does not detect metal unless it is large and the sensor is right on top of the object. Disappointign for a child.

It can only detect metal right next to the coil and if the coil is hardly moving. I hid some coins under a few leaves and then moved the detector side to side across them. Read more
