I think this is a lovely book and one I would have liked as a small child. I'm not a reading age expert but I would read this TO my 3 year old niece, WITH my 5 year old niece and my 8 year old niece would read it herself and maybe ask for some help with pronouncing a few of the dino names - a really fun book for a young free reader.

To give you an idea of whether this book would suit your child I've detailed some of the text below - the book doesn't have an advisory regarding age but you can get a sense of the level of depth. Overall, the book is very colourful, with lovely paintings of the dinosaurs and bold text, highlighted with boxes and use of capitals and italics. The tips for parents are excellent - they guide you to explore different areas of education with the kid using the book as a starting point.

We begin with advice on how to use the book and end with tips for parents, a dinosaur map and a glossary. NatGeo are trying hard to make this a great resource for kids. The bulk of the book consists of more than 100 pages of dinosaurs - broken into chapters (Small, big, giant and gigantic dinosaurs).

Each dinosaur gets a double page spread. One page has a beautiful illustration with a couple of little factoids or questions eg. "Herrerasaurus used its TEETH to cut prey into CHUNKS it could SWALLOW" or "What do you do if you can't reach something you want?". The second page has more information, eg: "TYRANNOSAURUS WAS THE DINOSAUR KING. Tyrannosaurus is one of the most famous dinosaurs. It was a fierce hunter with long, sharp teeth. The jaws of the Tyrannosaurus were very strong. The dinosaur could use its jaws to crush animals it caught for food.

There are four sections to the book, each covering a size group of dinosaur, "Small", "Big", "Giant" and "Gigantic". Within each section, each dinosaur is given a double page - one page illustrated with great detail and the other page filled with interesting facts on colourful backgrounds of yellow, orange, green, blue and purple.

Each dinosaur has a main fact in larger font, in block capitals, for example, "AMARGASAURUS HAD A NECK SAIL" or "CARNOTAURUS HAD A SQUARE HEAD". There are also other facts in colourful bubbles around the pages, as well as the main body of text which comprises of two short paragraphs.

Each dinosaur has a mini fact table, which states which period it lived in, what food it ate and a size guide showing its silhouette next to a human for scale.

There are questions posed to the reader, which tie in with the information already given about that dinosaur on that page, such as "Can you think of any of today's animals that eat insects?" or "Have you ever seen an ostrich?"

There is a phonetic spelling (Say my name) for parents (and children) to read out loud the names, so that names like Ankylosaurus is transcribed, "AN-kee-lo-SORE-us" showing where to put the stress as well as the pronunciation.

I have found this book fascinating -I've learnt lots of little facts about familiar dinosaurs and had my eyes opened to dinosaurs I've never heard of before. I have discovered wonderful gems of information such as the difference between a Brontosaurus and an Apatasaurus is..... absolutely nothing! Apparently it was discovered and named then later "discovered" and named again. Some time later someone realised that they were one and the same creature!

I bought this as a gift for a 3yr old (dinosaur obsessed) - apparently he loves it and wants it read every night before bed. His Mum also says there is plenty in there that is currently going over his head so it's a double win - the kid loves it now and will continue to love it for a few more years as he grows into the volume of info in the book!

I really liked the National Geographi My First Space book so I purchased this as well. But this one was disappointing. The information was more like random trivia in my opinion which made it hard to compare dinosaurs. It could not hold my son's interest and we have rarely looked at it. We do still enjoy the Space book.

I first bought this book for a neighbour's kid on his 6th birthday. He loved it. Recently another neighbour's kid became 7 soiI bought another one and this boy also loves it. It is well aimed at that age group and their knowledge of Din osaurs now outstrips mine by a large margin. Well composed book.

What a great book --- it certainly captured my boy readers' imaginations! There are lots of great illustrations and easy to read text without being dumbed down. Good for non-fiction readers and really useful with a recent school topic.

I have just discovered the National Geographic range of books for little kids and cannot recommend them enough. My son is 6 and I would say these are just perfect for young enquiring minds.
