5.0 out of 5 stars I'm Happy Now 13 Sep 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
First copy had a very badly, and I mean very badly, gouged disk but good old Amazon, as usual, replaced it without quibble. So apart from the extra couple of days while they shipped a replacement and remembering to pop the 'broken' one in the post, no real biggy.

As to the series itself, while this version doesn't have the 7th. 'musical' episode, which BTW, having seen, is not missed, it is quite an excellent little mini series, almost on par with the beeb's output. Plus, it does have the wonderful voice of Stephen Fry narrating the four main episodes, always a bonus. Even the 'making of' and the 'science behind migration' episodes are pretty interesting even though they aren't narrated by Stephen.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very mediocre 10 May 2011
By Nazo
Format:Blu-ray
I purchased and watched this after having seen several BBC World Blue-rays, so my critical standards were quite high. After all National Geographic has built a reputation that spans for many decades, and is well known for being the best at what it does. Stephan Fry being one of my favorite narrators, I was really looking forward to be blown away. But the truth is very different than what I anticipated.

Yes! The images are immaculately shot; but that's what you expect from National Geographic. Yes! Stephan Fry has one of the most soothing voices of all time. But what this set sorely misses is depth, scientific depth that is.

The content is so superficial, that quite often I was left wondering, "but why?" "How come?" Great migrations does not attempt to answer questions that might arise. It simply presents things as they are, in a very linear fashion, with Stephan Fry's narrative being nothing but an exercise in stating the obvious. After a while such a narrative becomes a nuisance, simply because it does not add anything substantial.

I don't really need someone telling me "and the elephants start quenching their thirst around the lake..." when I can bloody well see that for myself.

Surprisingly, the extras included are the most intriguing and interesting aspects of the whole documentary. Seeing how the scientists devised methods to track down the migrating animals was quite refreshing and insightful.

National Geographic is massively behind BBC World when it comes to quality wildlife documentaries. I urge anyone who is impressed by this offering to have a look at any of BBC's wildlife series presented by the great David Attenborough.

All in all, I learned very little watching this set, and in the future I shall be extra cautious about purchasing other National Geographic products.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb and superb again 24 Dec 2012

This is tremendously well filmed and narrated with some excellent shots of individual animals , I was particularly interested as it showed an area I had visited but I intend to watch it again and again.
