Book Description

20 Nov 2013
The world's best landscape photography and photojournalism stunningly depicts the passage of a single day, from dawn's first light to the closing moments of sunset. Experience shimmering mornings and opaque nights through the eyes of our finest photographers in this gloriously uplifting volume - the latest entry in National Geographic's best-selling annual photography collection. Daybreak whispers mauve over a long ocean horizon. The morning sun twinkles in a drop of dew. The broad heat of midday radiates over a beach strewn with sweat-baked sunbathers. A slender crescent moon caresses a gnarled tree standing alone on the heath. Full of one-of-a-kind photographs, this breathtaking collection gives readers a front-row seat to the world's wonders, from its most imposing cityscapes to its most pristine landscapes. Selected from the portfolios of the most celebrated photographers, the images in this book are strikingly arranged to depict the beauty and majesty of light in all its variations. Short legends accompany every photograph to explain the picture, the scene it conveys, or how the shot was captured, along with inspiring quotations from literature. With the widest possible array of perspectives, close-ups, and details, these photos present a new experience of time and light. Large-format pages and a simple, striking design play up the photographs as they demand. Chapters dedicated to each phase of the day show distinctly different yet harmonizing visions, with unique insight and perspective from photographers, confirming that around the world and throughout all time, the passage of light from dawn to dusk, from morning to night and back again, connects us all.

Review

"If you like to be able to just sit and look at beautiful images and not have to read that much, this book is for you, or whoever is lucky enough to get it as a gift from you." -- "Nature Photographers Online Magazine""No matter where you live, the sun rises and sets. Along its path the light changes -- sometimes imperceptibly, always gradually, and sometimes stunningly on its path from dawn to dark and back again... "Dawn to Dark Photographs: The Magic of Light "tells this lush story through the work of National Geographic's best visual storytellers." "-McPherson Sentinel""From peaceful lakes and broad landscapes, to Muslim pilgrims gathering to pray, U.S. Army soldiers on patrol and a crowded New York City sidewalk on a rainy day and myriad locations and scenes in between, the photographers of National Geographic share different shades of light in stunning images from around the world." The front page gives us a glance from what you might see inside. Not every picture is breathtaking as you might imagine but NG does give a wonderful imagery collection from a great idea from dawn to dark. Well Done!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not spectacularly so. 13 Jan 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Contains many exceptionally fine images and a lot of dross. Sadly many are spoiled by being printed into the gutter and so lose their impact. Fair value but firmer editing and choosing images from a wider range of sources might have produced a far better book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth much more than it cost. 3 Jan 2014

Four hundred large, thick pages with wonderful images depicting light. I wasn't sure that I would like it, but I DO. Very Much. There is a great deal of magic in these pages. Often there are a few words from the photographer or the writer about why and how and always there is thought and information about the subject matter. The book inspires - I feel privileged to own this book.
