“Nathan’s Run” is the second John Gilstrap book I have read, the first one I read being the one that was actually published after this one, “At all costs”. Both books bear remarkable similarities being stories about flight from what are normally considered the protecting authorities.
Nathan Bailey isn’t your average 12 year old American kid. Not only has been imprisoned in a correctional centre but after being attacked by one of the guards he’s killed the guard and escaped. Now on the run from the chasing authorities Nathan is being condemned by the media and is seemingly without allies. When he manages to get on air with the nation’s favourite radio chat show host, called “The Bitch” he begins to tell his story of the death of his parents, his brutal uncle and the beatings and assaults in the correctional centre. Nathan’s tragic story seems to split society and suddenly the phone calls to the radio station seem to begin to support the poor boy. Warren Michaels the policeman in charge of recapturing Nathan starts to draw parallels with his own son, who was killed in a motor accident, with the haunted attitude that Nathan projects he becomes more determined not only to recapture the youngster but to ensure that no further harm comes to the boy.
This is a real page turner of a thriller and once the first couple of chapters have drawn you in you’ll be hooked until the last page. The plot of the story does require the reader to take more than a couple of leaps of faith and logic to keep with the sense of it all, but the rapid pace of the story telling more than makes up for this.
Like one of the other reviewers has mentioned I was slightly disappointed with the ending in so much as we had a great climax to the whole proceedings which when completed just ended full stop. A little chapter of wrap-up would have served well here.
John Gilstrap certainly seems to be an author to look out for and anyone planning their holiday reading material could do a lot worse than choose this book.
