5.0 out of 5 stars Self made man 22 Jun 2011

This is by far the best book I ever picked up and read besides the Bible. This man is truly the definition of "self-made". Intelligent, reflective, self-teaching, evaluating individual.

Frederick Douglas had every reason from the day he was born to pre-judge certain individuals and to carry with him hate and frustration inside his heart. Despite everything he witnessed and lacked in his life, he had the inner initiative to teach himself what others would not teach him, to take what he believed to be his, and to give each new face he encountered a clean slate.

Frederick Douglas learned to read by tricking the other children in the neighborhood into little games where he could learn. He taught himself by paying attention to signs that he saw in his town and using the newspaper. This is so impressive to me. Especially now as a parent. It is amazing how people make it to adulthood in an illiterate status with all the resources we have in a world where people like Mr. Douglas existed. He decided he would learn when people did not want him to. That is real gain.

The book is graphic. If you are any bit of emotional you will cry and shake your head in awe at least once if not a dozen times. There is terror in his life, and there is triumph. There was disappointment and happiness to so many degrees as cannot be expressed in this short review.

Read it, you will be so enriched by his experiences.
