Book Description

3 Oct 2013

A timely and gripping investigation of illegal drugs in the UK. Filled with fascinating and shocking case studies gathered over twenty years of investigative reporting, it explodes many of the myths and misconceptions about drug use, and makes a compelling case for a new way forward.

Looking at the dealers, the users, the police and the politicians, Narcomania charts how consumption and markets have fragmented and changed over the last decade; follows the money to reveal where Britain's licit and illicit economies overlap; explains where each of the major recreational drugs comes from; and maps which drugs are popular in different parts of the country. It will explode many of the myths and misconceptions about drug use, and tap into fraught debates about how politicians, parents and police should respond.

In the wake of the internet boom, globalisation and a decade of decadence, Britain sits at a crossroads in the legalisation-versus-intolerance debate. While other nations have succeeded with progressive experiments, inertia and self-contradiction define British drug policy to the detriment of everyone except the criminal underworld. Unsurprisingly, in the light of this book, our politicians are confused about what will please or displease the all-important middle class electorate. Equally unsurprisingly, however, so much myth and confusion surrounds the subject that clarity must be brought to chaos if the wisdom of the crowd is ever to surface....

By emma who reads a lot TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
If you occasionally find yourself (like me) watching a far-fetched fictional detective programme and muttering "oh come on" when someone turns out to be running a vast money-laundering empire from the local minicab office, then this book is for you. Because that storyline turns out to be totally true. Daly and Sampson's broad portrait of the British drug scene is full of revealing stories about lawyers smuggling illicit substances in their oversized shoes; small-town accountants who turn out to be running huge business empires based in the Caymans; gangs who simply specialise in picking up carrier bags stuffed with cash and then depositing it in small amounts; and canny drug dealers who understand how not to alert police with their spend, spend, spend, and who have invested all their ill-gotten gains in buy-to-let mortgages.

The authors have set out to chart the world of illicit drugs in the UK, and their story stretches from the addicts right up to the major global banks who provide bank accounts for huge quantities of drug cash. They have been to meet and interview some incredibly unsavoury sounding characters and those meetings flesh out the book. However, the book is far from anecdotal. There are tons of facts here. The writers' background in drugs and social affairs journalism has served them well because they have clearly accessed a huge amount of statistics as well as having all the best stories to hand. Costs and prices of various drugs, quantities seized, the details of deals in a single estate gang, the number of `Mr Bigs' in the UK as a whole: all these figures are given real physical size.

One of the most intriguing aspects for me is the way in which the drug market clearly responds so instantly and flexibly to any efforts to control it. Drugs become illegal?
