Product Description

From the Publisher

The twenty-six marshals who served Napoleon were gathered from every strata of French society, linked only by their reputation for courage. Some were cultivated men, some quite the reverse. Glory-seekers, feuders and barely disguised looters, their individual careers have never been described with greater verve and accuracy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good review of an unusual subject 22 Oct 2005
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
How often does one read about Napoleon's campaigns, come across a name, and have need of a biographical note about the 'name'. Napoleon's Marshals provides such data, but beyond a mere note. Each of the chapters is written by an authority on the person or sub-period. A useful book to have on a holiday, or a train journey, or a flight, because each chapter is an episode in itself. Recommended.

Napoleon's 26 marshals are among the most fascinating group of men in history, and this book contains biographies of each marshal and an account of their key battle/campaign. Of course, these are only small biographies. However, they serve the purpose of introducing the reader to each marshal, and highlighting opportunities for further reading.

Well worth it.

Chandler original work on Napoleon was brilliant, this collection of reviews of each Marshal by different Historians is very good and enjoyable, You do get a flavour of their characters good and bad.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very poor. 3 April 2005
By A Customer
Doesn't live up to its promise. Rather than the biographies that the size of the book suggests, what the reader in fact gets are thumbnails accompanied by a great deal of padding. The standard of writing is also poor, varying between mediocre and downright bad. Although the book is still worth having (simply because there is very little on the Marshals available in English), no way is it worth the full price. Even the discounted Amazon price is too much. Get it used instead.
