Review

Apart from rare and rather costly work published in France, this is the only complete collection of Rousselot s legacy on the period. And this is the only version presented in a highly attractive and reasonably affordable fashion for the English-speaking public. History buffs and military hobbyists will be left dazed and amazed by this superb and invaluable book. --Toy Soldier and Model Figure magazine, September 2011

Product Description

Complete collection of work by one of the greatest military artists in historyLucien Rousselot is one of the world's most important military artists, having played an integral role in establishing uniformology as a true science. He was born in France at a time when the 1871 military defeat by Prussia was still very present in the psyche of the French people. After all, it had not been long since the French army under Napoleon I had not only amazed the world, but had stood victoriously astride the whole of Europe. Indeed, triumphant armies guided by the military genius of Bonaparte had marched down the avenues of Paris to the delight of enormous crowds. It is no surprise, therefore, that the talented young Rousselot decided to devote much of his life to recreating the martial splendour of France s greatest age. The Napoleonic period offered innumerable opportunities for his skills, as uniforms varied widely in style and colour, befitting for an age when individual glory still counted for much on Europe s battlefields.Rousselot received his artistic training at the renowned School of Decorative Arts in Paris while at the same time immersing himself in the study of the classic military illustrators. His immense talent was equalled only by his innate modesty and intense commitment to his work. This level of dedication ultimately resulted in the marvellous water-colours and exacting narrative presented in this publication.Aside from a now-rare work published in France costing many hundreds of dollars, Napoleon s Army: 1790 1815 is the only complete collection of Rousselot s life s work on the period, here presented admirably yet affordably for the English-speaking public.

A classic! 10 Aug 2010
Format:Hardcover
For anyone intersted in Napoleonic uniforms, this is an instant classic in book form. Previously published as prints, they have long been the gold standard for French Napoleonic uniform detail. And, yes, it's all here. I have a few of the prints and the book contains all the illustrations and text of the originals.
The good bits: basically all of it. You get pretty much pure uniform detail. No operational history of the troops themselves.
On the minus side, it doesn't have information on many of the smaller units. Maybe the format could have been larger.
The cost is about the price of seven or eight Osprey titles. I love Osprey, but if you just want uniform information, this is the better bet.
If, like me, you have been into this for way too many years, you may have all those French magazines; the Uniformes and Tradition series. Well you probably have all the information already, but I'm willing to bet few will resist the temptation to buy this book. Go ahead, it's a great read.

A Kid's Review
Format:Hardcover
This book is amazing. I now know that when some dim wit pipes up on the Internet to say in 1809 the French did not wear that, you can say to them prove it!!! This book is so illuminating as to the variance in uniforms, and the illustrations are so authoritative as the references are there to back them up. I cannot recommend this highly enough a great buy.

Rousselot the Master 22 Dec 2011
Format:Hardcover
Well what can you say about this book the chance of get all the Napoleonic plates in one place at a reasonable price. You cannot wish for more than that or can you.

I would have liked to see all the 106 Plates published not just the Napoleonic ones, as this would have completed the story on the uniforms of the French army over several centuries which would have made this book a bit more lively and appealed to a larger audience.

I would have liked to have seen the set up reflect the way that Rousselout published his own plates and perhaps to top this voulme off to have added a few of his individual plates ,which would I think have shown thetransition from his sheets to the finished indivudal product, his paintings.

Still thats my individual thought, you cannot fault this book it is what it is a excellent reference work.
