5.0 out of 5 stars For the Thoughtful Traveler 12 Mar 2013
By Robert E. Cook - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I live in the Napa valley. I produce wine and write thrillers here. I've read columns by Paul Franson in the local paper and like his newsletter; he's well regarded. He wrote The NapaLife's Insider's Guide to the Napa Valley and published it back in September. It's a marvelous book. It informs, it entertains and, for the thoughtful reader, it advises in a pleasant, subtle way.

I happened to read to read this book just now because Franson and I share an acquaintance, Jim Conaway, who is releasing a book set in the Napa Valley, Nose, this week. Conaway broke some good china in Napa with his earlier literary efforts. He has a lot more creative room in a novel, so I decided to refresh myself on the area and its history. I poked around Amazon and found Insider's Guide to the Napa Valley. I `looked inside' and read the first few pages, then bought it. It came yesterday. I haven't met Franson; shame on me.

Wow. Good book!

I'm now ripe with Napa background, my valley is a much closer friend and I'm ready for Nose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of The Napa Insider's Guide to Napa Valley 9 Nov 2012
By Douglas A. Patterson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This Guide to what to do when in Napa Valley is organized for easy reference because the headings are things that you naturally look for, like where to picnic or where to go for cool architecture, or history, or off the beaten path, or where to eat, etc, in addition to wineries of various stripes and colors. Further, the language is easy to read yet has depth. Paul Franson tries to educate you while he is answering your questions, which I like. 5 stars.
4.0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy the Kindle Version 4 May 2014
By Bohemian Bon Vivant - Published on Amazon.com

The content provides a good overview, but I was surprised to find there are no linked indexes. There's literally no way to navigate the e-book other than to thumb through the pages, which takes forever. The book itself I would recommend, just not in Kindle format.
3.0 out of 5 stars Inexperienced traveler 14 Feb 2014
By Jeff Meyer - Published on Amazon.com

This book is ok but there are no pictures (as was stated by another reviewer) and I found that made the book kind of boring. There was nothing to grab my attention. I am sure the info is fine but it seems to be a chore to read it. A nice map and some enticing pictures would have helped me. The info seems to be pretty brief. I think I'll try a more traditional travel guide.
5.0 out of 5 stars For all Winos 1 Nov 2013

Although I drink my share of wine, all I really knew before reading this was white or red. This book is a must to read before visiting Napa. It has all the information you need to have a great experience. Great chapter on the wines by type (CAB, Merlot, Zin etc). It has info on many of the 400 or so wineries/vineyards in NAPA. The restaurants of mention were all excellent. It's written from the viewpoint of a local rather than some outsider with limited experience. I always buy travel books about a place before I visit, and this is the best I have seen yet. Takes a bit of getting used to it with it's atypical organization, but once you get used to it, it becomes a NAPA bible. There were no pictures which I think is also a good thing. It could benefit from an Index, although with such a diverse content it would be hard to construct.
