4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - brilliantly written, but beware......, 1 Aug 2006
By Mr. K. J. Santi "Kevin The Raven" (South England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Nano (Mass Market Paperback)
After running out of books in the sci-fi genre to read, I went for Nano on a recommendation from another Amazon reviewer - I can't remember his name but thanks for the pointer - this is an excellent book.

The story starts quickly with little character introduction before we are plunged directly into the main storyline. This is a good mix of crime thriller and sci-fi which rips along at a fair old pace and takes a few neat turns. It leads up to the section of the book which several other reviewers are raving about - I have an alternative opinion though.

The storyline drives the two main characters to a situation where they are sitting about with literally nothing to do, so they start postulating about the rights and wrongs of nanotechnology, and its potential impact on the world. This is well written and yet strangely uncomfortable section of the book. Having only really been exposed to Nanotechnology from watching Star Trek, the technical and moral arguments are fascinating and go into areas you would never have thought of yourself. They make you think about the future possibilities of Nanotechnology in considerable depth.

This is clearly a subject that the author has strong opinions on, as can be seen by his self advertising of his website and associated journals and interest groups. Its gets just a little bit high minded and Michael Moore-ish for my liking. Just as I was about to reject the book the story picks up again and the book races to a unexpected conclusion that contradicts some of the earlier arguments against Nanotechnology.

All that aside, this is a excellent book. Don't worry to much about the politics and postulating as it does not distract from what is a well written, superbly constructed and expertly researched book that all sci-fi readers would enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Techno-Thriller!!, 16 Feb 2006
By James Baker "mishy_mash" (Cambridge, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nano (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the eighth thriller I've read in the last year and is definitely amongst the best of these. This really is a book that you won't be able to (or will want to) put down.

The story starts at break-neck speed and never really slows up, keeping you totally enthralled along the way. Based on a real technology that is currently being developed, there are many moral questions posed throughout the book and you will find yourself constantly wrestling to find your own solutions to these. Even days after finishing this book, I found myself both worried & excited about the potential of the technology described. There are also fascinating insights into factual occurrences and how they have been handled by the 'powers that be'.

In short, a great read with great characters and great plot that will give you plenty to think about. I would have rated this five stars, but some of the technical stuff did drag on maybe just a little too much. Do not be put off by this! If you could rate in half stars, I would have given this 4.5.

Brilliant, read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like techno-thrillers then you won't be disappointed!, 22 Oct 2005
This review is from: Nano (Mass Market Paperback)
A particular aspect which I liked was the level of tech-talk, the research was impeccable - JR Marlow certainly knows his stuff, best of all everything in Nano is plausible. The technology may seem a little far fetched at times but it really isn't. To my mind at least, everything is achieveable, maybe not now but sometime in the future.

The characters were interesting, you really get to know the lead male, John Marrek. I started to really feel for the man, as you will find out by reading.

The balance of tech/politics/ethical reasoning throughout ensured you were turning the pages late into the night. From the start the pace was set with an unexpeced event.

Overall; an entertaining read.
