Amazon.co.uk Review

The list of collaborators on Nancy Sinatra, the self-titled album by the legendary singer reads like a who's who of latter day contemporary song-writers. Songs written and/or performed by artists such as Calexico, Jon Spencer, Jarvis Cocker and U2 makes for an interesting collection that sound timeless but never dated. The highlight is Jarvis Cocker's "Don't Let Him Waste Your Time"--a mesmerising guitar line fits Sinatra's melody perfectly and the dense production, sounding a little like Phil Spector, adds an added warmth to Sinatra's already rich voice. Jon Spencer's "Ain't No Easy Way" takes a modern slant on the upbeat innocence of sixties pop with his trademark blues guitar making it sound fresh, funky and a little bit dirty. In contrast, Morrissey's "Let Me Kiss You" is pleasant enough romantic guitar-pop but maybe not as instantly accessible as the rest of the album. Proving that she is more than a great voice, Sinatra's entirely self-penned "About a Fire" captures an ever so slight psychedelic feel, somewhere between Steve Winwood's traffic and the crooning intensity of Grace Slick in Jefferson Airplane. An appropriate closing song is "Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad", a melancholy standard written by Bono and the Edge, originally intended for her father, which sounds like it could have been recorded with a jazz trio one late night in a Vegas lounge. A great album of songs, performed by a great singer with a bunch of starry-eyed "youngsters" whose admiration for Nancy Sinatra shines throughout. --David Trueman

5.0 out of 5 stars Two shots of happy..., 7 Oct 2004
This review is from: Nancy Sinatra (Audio CD)
This is startling and has not been off my CD player since it arrived, bought on the strength of the single, the Morrisey-penned "Let Me Kiss You", which is good but proves to be just one of the many glorious tracks on the album.
The album itself is surprisingly short, 37 minutes, eleven songs, just like in the sixties. The music, too, written for Nancy by the likes of Jarvis Cocker, John Spencer, Bono and others, is most pleasingly reminiscent of her heyday without being in any way pastiche. The people who wrote these songs plainly understand her voice and wrote to those strenths.
The exceptional tracks on this album are said Morrisey track (which I have been singing to myself for two weeks now), the Thurston Moore track - which is the one least like a "standard", not dissimilar to the material he wrote for Brigitte Fontaine a year or so back - and the breathtaking closer by Bono, "Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad", which one could easily imagine having been sung by Nancy's legendary father.

5.0 out of 5 stars FANCY NANCY, 6 Oct 2004
This review is from: Nancy Sinatra (Audio CD)
Got Nancy's new CD last Thurs in the UK - bad shop violated the street date. It's simply the best thing that she has ever done - well IMHO anyway. Just shows that with good production & a careful choice of modern day songwriters & songs the 'older lady' can still be meaningful & successful in 2004. Best tracks are 'Two Shots Of Happy, One Shot Of Sad', 'Don't Mean Nothing' & Momma's Boy'. Nancy seems to be singing with a new found passion and the arrangements are suited to her style with the result that she still sounds like herself and not some 'wanna be, used to be'. I can now add Nancy's name to those of Loretta Lynn & Marianne Faithfull who just seem to get better with age.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent album, 18 Nov 2004

Rucho (Buenos Aires, Argentina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nancy Sinatra (Audio CD)
Nancy Sinatra has joined some of the best musicians of today and she has returned with a long awaited album of new songs. With the only exception of "Mamma's boy",in which I hear her different, all the album is pure Nancy Sinatra, there are some modern arrangements but it's essentially her style. If all these songs have been specially written for her, there's no doubt that the writers know her music very well and that it has been a high influence on them, if not she's been able to stamp her style on them. While listening to this album I realized that she's not trying to fit into any current style of today's most popular music, but she's bringing to the present her own personal style, which works wonderfully well. In a time when good music is not frequently found, this album has brought back a gifted voice with a set of excellent songs, a fact to celebrate. Nancy Sinatra's voice sounds as well as during her "hit" years, she shows an exemplary choice of songs, songwriters, arrangers, producers; she can give more high quality music as she has done with this album.
