Book Description

1 July 2004
The Ballad of Sexual Dependency is a visual diary chronicling the struggle for intimacy and understanding between friends and lovers collectively described by Nan Goldin as her "tribe." Her work describes a world that is visceral and seething with life. As Goldin writes: "Real memory, which these pictures trigger, is an invocation of the color, smell, sound, and physical presence, the density and flavor of life." "Goldin, at the age of 33, has created an artistic masterwork that tells us not only about the attitudes of her generation, but also about the times in which we live." --Andy Grundberg, The New York Times "Goldin's prescient philosophy has, if anything been solidified by the intervening decade, and her Ballad resounds more poignantly than ever in its tenth-anniversary republication." --Lawrence Schubert, Detour magazine Text by Nan Goldin. Hardcover, 10 x 9 in./148 pgs / 129 color.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poigniant... 21 Feb 2008
Format:Hardcover
Wonderful visual diary that mirrors the realities of modern life. A must for anyone who has an interest in social or informal photography, art and/or the psychology of contemporary living. Nan Goldin's often graphic images are a pointed reminder that we are all beings dependent on others for emotional survival.

5.0 out of 5 stars the most expressive photographer 25 July 2012
By schumann_bg TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
I have always loved Nan Goldin's work for its potent emotional force and the way in which it bears witness to lives lived on the edge. Decried as 'heroin chic' by President Clinton, it seems to me that the images are more sad than chic, but they do have an amazing vividness and sense of getting inside the world of her subjects. Presumably this comes from living with them and so often having a camera in her hand - the sense of trust is palpable. Some of the images are shocking - one of Nan herself with two black eyes, for instance, having been beaten up by her boyfriend, but the photos never seem judgemental or even very concerned with moral questions. They just get at something that most photographers can't access, and this is their extraordinary value - they are like the soul laid bare. A retrospective book was called 'I'll be your mirror' - and you feel this is what she does for people. The lack of distance is remarkable and the saturated colour caught by her Hasselblad camera makes for a deeply seductive surface which seems to allow us to see the essential being with no overlay of moral questioning or need to explain.
