Jessie Keane returns with another tale of crime and vengeance in London's East End...In 1941, mixed race Ruby Darke is born into a family that seem to hate her, but why? While her two brothers dive into a life of gangland violence, Ruby has to work in their family store. As she blossoms into a beautiful young woman she crosses paths with aristocrat Cornelius Bray, a chance meeting that will change her life forever. When she finds herself pregnant, and then has twins, she is forced to give her children away. At that point she vows never to trust another man again. As the years pass, Ruby never forgets her babies, and as the family store turns into a retail empire, Ruby wants her children back. But secrets were whispered and bargains made, and if Ruby wants to stay alive she needs to forget the past, or the past will come back and kill her.

5.0 out of 5 stars BLINDING! 5 Sep 2012
By Best Books To Read TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
<Sighs and scuffs feet> Why? Every time I buy a Jessie Keane I promise myself I will take my time. But no, who am I kidding? I do what I always do, get thoroughly engrossed and then race through the book only to feel disappointed that I have again finished a JK book and now have the long wait until the next one! When I realised that Jessie Keane was introducing a new character I was pretty excited. Having said that, I wasn't sure whether they would live up to the fantastic characters that feature in the Annie Carter series

In this book we meet Ruby Darke who is a mixed race girl being brought up in War torn London by her abusive father and two elder brothers. While her two elder brothers get involved in the criminal underworld, Daisy works in the family shop and tries her best to keep everybody happy. When she is encouraged to lead a secret life she goes along not knowing that she will be swept off her feet by the dashing aristocrat Cornelius Bray. When she finds herself pregnant and gives birth to twins she is forced into giving them away. What happens next is that the book tells us Ruby's life story. We see her become a success in business but forgo love because of her desperate desire to never be hurt again.

I was truly engrossed from the very first few pages. Ruby Darke is a young girl with real spirit and you really get a feel for how she is treated in the 40's for being mixed race. Her family are nothing short of awful but it made me feel like I had to keep willing her on in my mind because she was such a likeable girl. Every few chapters there would be a slight time change and the years start to progress and we see how each passing year changes things for her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nameless - Couldn't put it down - cracking read! 26 Sep 2012

Jesse Keane books just get better and better (just like Manda-Sue Hellar & Martina Cole) Nameless was an excellent read and I couldn't put it down and was late from several lunch breaks due to just wanting to read on. Amazing story line about the twins being born in war-time London to a single mum. Cracking ending, although I was gutted it ended! Hope Jesse writes a follow on story about the twins and Ruby. I fully recommend any Jesse Keane title but this one was a thrilling read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jessie Keane just gets better and better 12 Sep 2012

What can I say..... Move over Martina (Cole) and watch out Kimberly (Chambers), Jessie is about to steal your crowns!!! This is one seriously good book, I'm not going to repeat all other 5 star reviews cos I agree with all of them, I think this is her best book yet and cant wait till her next one. The other thing I like is that we are getting a good book for a reasonable price and not ask to fork out over £10 for an average book just because its a certain author. If you are thinking about buying this book.. just do it you wont be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth a Read 4 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having read a number of Jessie's books this wasn't what I expected. Set in the 1920's and covering up to around 1975. We start the book reading of the main characters demise. I have to admit that it took me a while to get in to this book and I actually re-read the first chapter twice. However, it was well worth persevering with.

It wasn't long before the magic was worked and the characters really started to work. The main character Ruby, lives a rags to riches life but the path she travels is filled with violence, anguish, torment and finally love before her world is blown apart again. This is a gritty and gripping story with wonderful characters that you eithwe love or hate. Or even love to hate.

I didn't want this story to end and it certainly didn't end as expected. The last sting in the tails tears it all apart and the final chapter made me want to shout out in anger and dismay. A brilliant book. I really hope a sequel is written as so many questions are left unanswered.
