Excellent page-turner,

This isn't the kind of book I normally read; a noir detective novel which wasn't originally written in English. But I really enjoyed the writing talents of the author, who is able to weave words to powerful effect. Each chapter is written from one of two timelines and from the perspective of a given character. One memorable chapter is written from the perspective of Henry Kissinger, and spends pages of wry detail on the image of one of the world's most powerful men, sitting on a toilet on a plane in mid-air. It's different to read a novel written from an entirely continetal european perspective, with an emphasis on "real" Italian culture as opposed to the stuff you see on postcards. Reminded of their past in the second world war, suspicious about the onslaught of American culture, and obsessed with power politics and corruption. As a word of warning though, the skipping around places and timeliens can get quite confusing!

I read an advanced copy of this book. If the author's editor has done his stuff it will be an exceptional thriller in its final form. In the edition I read it was a touch overlong with some slightly purple passages that impeded the flow of the narrative to no real purpose.It's a gripping and original story which will appeal to conspiracy freaks, keeping them up until late at night. Cleverly contrived, with sympathetic main characters and well translated. it makes an exciting read.

Was really looking forward to this book - as lover of quality crime fiction as well as Italian culture.
Alas really disappointed. Story just too far-fetched and the language comes across as rather pretentious and over the top. Perhaps result of a not ideal translation or something that only works in Italian? One of the very few crime novels I have not been able to finish even whilst on holiday.
