Product Description

Product Description

You awaken in a small, enclosed room with metal walls. You have no knowledge of where you are. Perhaps a prison cell? An angled metal door lies ahead. With effort, you push the creaky slab open. This is not at all what you expected. The "prison" you just exited is a small, badly damaged spacecraft. Walking along a trail in foreign terrain, gun in hand, you journey onward to find out where you are and what your purpose is.

Observing your surroundings beyond the carnage reveals a beautiful and serene, yet somehow spooky, landscape. Two moons are in the sky. Ruins are in the distance. And a big, bad alien is eating one of your buddies. Unreal places you in a stunningly lifelike 3-D world that is as dangerous as it is beautiful. Whether you're playing alone or on the Internet, Unreal will change your perception of what computer games should be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to unreality...., 3 July 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Unreal (PC CD) (Video Game)
This game was basically overlooked when it came out because it was realeased at about the same time as Quake2 which was itself a good game. Unreal however has one distinct feature that has never existed in a BSP based game (Quake 1,2+3, Half life etc)....

Massive open areas.

The areas on unreal include massive canyons, complex acient temples, spaceships, entire villages and underground mining facilities.

The playability of the game should not be underestimated, it is great and the few flaws of the first game have been removed. The monsters, especially skaarj warriors are very intelligent. Their AI is incredible, they will try to dogde every bullet and missile.

The story is well worth a mention too. You play a criminal, done for god knows what, on a prison ship travelling through space, but something goes wrong and the ship is pulled to a mysterious planet where it crashes..

You come to sometime later, the ship is nearly empty but screams echo round the steel corridors and rooms. You grab a gun from a recently killed guy and go adventuring on the planet. You meet the nali, a banal race of four armed aliens who's religion prevents them from combat. They are being ruled by the Skaarj, a race of vicious creatures from another planet who force the nali into slave labour and despise all other forms of life. You need to get off this planet alive, and you've got to get guns, lots of guns. You've got to have wits, for the complex puzzels, and a keen eye to spot clues and secrets.

This game will keep you entertained for hours, perhaps days, and you still wont complete it if you just go around shooting everything. It is a First Person Shooter, but like most FPS's it's violence factor is over stated.

If you're looking for Adventure, look for this. If you're looking for violence go buy Kingpin

5.0 out of 5 stars THE ABSOLUTELY UNSURPASSED CLASSIC FPS!!!, 17 Nov 2007

= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

Where should I begin praising the PERFECT GAME?

Graphically, it may seem dated today yet it was cutting edge at its time. I remember getting the original game, almost 10 years ago, bundled with an nVidia graphix-card - and could not believe my eyes! Beautifully rendered surfaces, exceptional environments and an UNBELIEVABLE sky.

The weapons are well designed, there are upgrades and all have two different modes of firing! Walk and there is (adjustable) bobbing. Jump and you better had measured the distance or land in water - otherwise you get torn to pieces.

The game is pretty much linear, yet shortcuts or back-doors are available at numerous points - so exploring is encouraged. Simple puzzles add to the game's appeal (push a lever to drop the ladder here or turn the power on to activate the elevator there) - and usually reward with a weapon powerup.

Something lacking in many shooters even today is UNREAL's balance and fairness: you could take an enemy down with a single sniper headshot - but so could they. UNREAL was the first game that WHERE you landed your shot started to count on the damage it did. EPIC had done a MONUMENTAL JOB!

What separated this game from the rest though were mainly two things: its unsurpassed atmosphere and its immersive story.
From the very first moment you wake up on the prison ship that was carrying you but crashed on an alien planet, you are gripped by fear and apprehension. You get only fleeing glimpses of the aliens - yet find ample evidence of their cruel handiwork on the ship's crew.
The first weapon you get is quite weak so you actually believe to be wandering out of the ship an into a world unknown with a puny phase gun. As the game progresses you are rewarded with both confidence and very impressive and innovative weapons. Who can forget the spinning blade-gun, blades bouncing around and shooting around corners but also yourself if not careful!

On top of everything else, the game is HUGE! The content of the original UNREAL alone would have been released in at least 3 installments today... Not to mention its (included for free!) multiplayer that spawned the UNREAL TOURNAMENT series.

They just don't make them like this anymore...

WITH THE HIGHEST RECOMMENDATIONS !!!

This is a superb game. What more can I say, if you don't own it get it its only a fiver.
The game is getting on a bit now but the graphics still impress and it should run smoothly on older machines.
Perhaps the best feature in this game is the atmosphere it creates as you fly around massive levels at high speeds, the music pumping in your eardrums stirring you on. Just when you stop to have a drink a beast starts to growl somwhere near bye.Superb.Buy it. You know you'll love it
