Amazon.co.uk Review

The popular first-person deathmatch frag-fest is back, but this time on the Xbox. The game that revolutionised the first-person shooter on the PC is once again doing what it does best and immersing you in a fast-paced action-packed adrenaline rush.

Gameplay follows the same style that hardened gamers will recognise, however Epic Games has done a lot to improve the game for the Xbox. New levels, new game types--all fully customisable--and special moves designed specifically for the Xbox give plenty of options to play with. Players now have a number of choices available to them; single player, tutorial, instant action and Live play.

The Live option, is of course the main crux of this game and connecting to the Xbox servers brings a host of other players to challenge and an endless supply of unpredictable gameplay ahead of you.

If you have time to notice the graphics of this game, then you obviously aren't getting into enough fights. That said, the Unreal Championship world is very impressive with the Xbox ably coping with numerous players and heavy action on the screen at the same time.

Likewise the sound, with its almost perfect 3-D soundscape of stray fire, pick-ups and taunts will make you feel you are right in the thick of the action.

Like Halo, this is a benchmark game for the Xbox. In that it has the same sense of actually giving the gamer what they want. If you need to fill 30 minutes of frag-tastic mindless mayhem then is the game for you. --Jason Denwood

Product Description

Built by Digital Extremes, part of the team responsible for Unreal and Unreal Tournament, Unreal Championship is introducing ground-breaking multi-player gameplay to the Xbox video game system from Microsoft.

The latest addition to the Unreal universe will immerse console gamers in the adrenaline packed first-person frag-fest that has revolutionised PC gaming. Designed specifically for Xbox and the Xbox controller, Digital Extremes has incorporated console-specific features, such as joypad-activated special moves, double jump, power-ups, unlockable features and more, to keep gamers glued to their couches with knuckle-whitened tension.

Unreal Championship uses the latest Unreal technology created by Epic Games to render the most amazing graphical effects seen on any console to date. The game combines a brilliant single player experience with an unparalleled multi-player component--players can fight through a series of matches in the single-player mode against computer-controlled opponents (bots) or play online against human-controlled adversaries.

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Classic...Nice, 21 Nov 2002
This review is from: Unreal Championship (Xbox) (Video Game)
What a game,

UC is without a doubt a must buy for any Xbox owner.

Graphics are excellent and are exactly what you'd expect from an Xbox. Gameplay is brilliant with enough gamemodes to keep you busy for a long while and when Xbox Live is launched in the UK it will go even further. Bombing run is particularly good, passing a ball/bomb between teammates and detonating it in the enemy base, cool.
Sound on the game is equally good. However, I would have liked to see a custom soundtrack option.
Apart from this one set back it is a great game.

Theres some lovely detail in the maps and the smoke dissipation is not to be missed.

Any First Person shooter fan should own this game.

Buy it, you wont be dissapointed

4.0 out of 5 stars you should wait for xbox live, 4 Jan 2003
This review is from: Unreal Championship (Xbox) (Video Game)
Well this game is the one of the first to be xbox live enabled. But with xbox live not available at the moment there doesnt seem to be much point buying it now as you are just deathmatch fragging in single player
Playing this game on your own is very good, but it does feel like a scaled down version of unreal tournament 2003 on pc. That game was awesome and so is this. The levels are mostly just slightly modifed versions and weapons are reskined. It does feel rather short as well but an instant action mode allows for replay value.
Graphically the game is very nice, but there are lots of areas where slowdown occurs from just walking around.
overall a great game, excels in multiplayer, but lacks sparkle in single player

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but needs polish, 14 Dec 2002
This review is from: Unreal Championship (Xbox) (Video Game)
Anyone who knows about FPS should know about Unreal, so I won't go into detail on what the game entails. What I will do is comment on the games technical misgivings and it's multiplayer component.

As I primarily bought this game to play with friends the split screen offline campaign is what I will concentrate on (as I don't have broadband where I live!). It plays superbly in a 2 player split screen bout, (I've yet to try 4 player). The action is rampant all the way, with bots taking up any unused places in the arena (though they can be disabled). Rockets, flak, grenades, body parts, you name it, they're flying all over the shop, frantic is the only word which can be used here! The game action can also be set to different speeds - 50%,100% and 150%, depending on how fast you want your fragfest. The graphics, while not the best the machine has to offer are good and the sound is atmospheric. The whole thing has a very PC feel to it and PC owners should feel at home, albeit with a joypad.

There is a down side however. I'm surprised no one has mentioned the slightly dodgy framerate which, although doesn't effect gameplay too much is sloppy considering how powerful the Xbox hardware is and what I know it is capable of (Halo and Splinter Cell being prime examples).

This causes the action to stutter on occassion, even in single player when there is nothing on screen! Certain maps are effected more than others (mainly large open arenas) and this can only be put down to lazy programming, as it doesn't affect aiming in the way that slowdown would. The game seems to run anywhere from 20-60 (at best) fps depending on what's going on. The developers have apparently enabled FSAA (Full Screen Anti Aliasing) for prettier graphics and this appears to be the main reason the game faulters. Hopefully the devs will release a patch via Xbox Live to rectify this in the future.

Apart from this gripe I can only recommend this title for the FPS hungry fans. Get fragging!
