Skynet suddenly becomes self-aware and sees all humans as a threat and thus results in a nuclear war of apocalytic proprotions. From the ages of the nuclear fire rise the machines, known as Terminators, their one mission, to earadicate mankind totally.
The humans the survived fight a vicious battle against these machines and it isn't until one man stands up to them, his name is John Connor, he is the leader of the human resistance. Skynet sends a Terminator back through time to kill Sarah Connor (before John was born), it failed...
The game follows very closely to the license, except it pays homage more to T2 than the original film (especially in the opening sequence). You play Kyle Reese (the hero from the first film) whose aim is to stop Skynet sending the original Terminator back through time.
The game paints a very vivid piture of a war-torn LA. The music sets the mood very well and is very true to the films. The game ven goes one step ahead by including machines that have never been seen before, machines such as HK recons and T-400s.
The controls in T:DOF play very similar to Devil May Cry which is no bad thing except the combat system is only a one button affair (press one button to use gun and another to use baton) although the weaponery is true to the film.
The game uses the use of an adrenaline function which, once used, reuslts in a matrix style slow motion effect which kills the machines quicker although once the timer reaches 9 the game is back to normal again (replenishing your adrenaline is done by killing the machines using your baton).
The game pits you as two other characters from TechCom who together must lead the human resistance to fight Skynet and save mankind. The graphics aren't mind-blowing but the films were all about atmosphere and T:DOF has it in spades.
The game isn't long (10 levels) on 3 difficulties although you have to be awarded 4 medals (out of 6 criterias) to unlock extras, criterias include fastest completion time and most enemies killed). The tasks in the game are varied and range from blowing up HK tanks to taking down a fusion reactor, there are even sections that pay homage to the original T2 arcade game.
The game is plagued by camera problems though and it can be a little disconcerting at times, although these are easily overlooked as the game, as mentioned, paints a very vivid picture of the Terminator universe.
If you are a fan of the films then this is highly recommended, although it has it's problems the prospect of seeing more of the Terminator universe is more than appealing.
We all knew that when the T-800 said 'I'll be back' it meant it!
