Amazon.co.uk Review

Nintendo admitted that the GBA couldn't really handle 3-D graphics, but Super Monkey Ball Jnr is one egg in the face they'll be only too delighted to receive. The original GameCube games detail the unusual activities of a bunch of monkeys who like nothing more than navigating mazes in a giant hamster ball. It's up to you to tilt the worlds around so that they succeed, and ensure that much fun is had by all. And that's exactly what Super Monkey Ball Jnr is about, too. Amazingly, it's an almost perfect copy of the first game with only a few of the levels and some of the graphical detail removed.

The only problem is that the ultra-fine control of the GameCube version has been lost because of the nature of the GBA's D-pad. This actually makes some of the mazes even harder, but short of using tilt control technology (sadly lacking here) it's hard to see how else it could have been done. To make up for things though the game contains three party games, in the form of Monkey Fight, Monkey Bowling and Monkey Golf. The last two work particularly well since they can be played by up to four people on just one console. All of this undoubtedly makes this the best monkey-in-a-ball simulator ever for the GBA... --David Jenkins

Product Description

Tilt and rotate the game world to manoeuvre your ball-bound monkey across 60-plus stages filled with barriers, bumps and rails. Super Monkey Ball Jnr features multiple game modes, and you can save your game on the cartridge (though there's only one save slot). There are three unlockable minigames--Monkey Fight, Monkey Bowling and Monkey Golf--for one to four players, and Monkey Duel mode lets two players compete against each other on any of the game's main levels. (Link cable(s) and extra copies of the game required for two to four players.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Small Screen Monkey Madness!!, 18 May 2003

Super Monkey Ball fans will be pleased to hear the format has translated excellently to the small screen. It's all here, mini-games and all!

For those unfamiliar with the Monkey Ball concept, your task is quite simply to take control of a wee-monkey trapped inside a ball, and guide the little fella through each colourful tilting level without falling off the edge, trying to collect a few bananas on the way. Simple format maybe, bloody addictive definately. This will keep you hooked for ages I can promise you, and with over 60 levels to attempt, the lifespan of the game is excellent. But just in case, Infogrames have very kindly included four "mini-games" from the Gamecube version. Monkey Golf, Monkey Bowling, Monkey Fight and the Monkey Dual games are great inclusions. Each of these is opened as a reward for playing the main game, once you've racked up enough "play points". Believe me, after one or two sessions of the main game, you'll soon have these opened!

Graphically it's certainly up to the standard we've come to expect of the GBA, that goes for the sound too. Not much of it, but what there is does the job. As with all games, the real key is in the playability, and this title has it in bundles. The control method does take a couple of plays to master, particularly for those used to the Gamecubes control pad. Don't let that put you off though.

All in all, a very well presented, highly addictive GBA game which will appeal to gamers of all ages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Monkey magic!, 10 May 2003

Having already established itself on Nintendo's Gamecube, 'Super Monkey Ball' now makes the transition across to the handheld market....with considerable success! Essentially, gameplay consists of you controlling a ball in which a monkey is trapped (think 'Gladiators' and those giant metal cages they used to roll around in) across a series of platforms. Naturally, these platforms increase in difficulty as the game progresses, until eventually you are faced with a seemingly impossible course to complete with an even tighter time limit in which to do it, but don't panic! Clever game design together with a perfectly steeped difficulty curve ensures that you do get a little bit further each time you play, and practice (together with a great deal of patience) will pay off eventually! As you gain proficiency in the main game you acquire points, which can then be used to unlock 4 mini-games, ranging from Golf (with some REALLY frustrating courses!) to TEN PIN BOWLING ( with what seems at first a completely impossible aiming system!) Whilst there is little to fault I do have one criticism: It's just so darn FRUSTRATING!! Some of the levels are so annoying that after falling off the edge of a platform for the tenth time in a row you are solely tempted to pack the whole thing in! Having said that, much pleasure is gained by eventually cracking the tricky little level that caused you so much grief in the first place, but I'm doubtful if 10 year olds will have the perseverance to keep returning. All in all, this is a cracking little gaming package worthy of a place in your collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Frustration incarnate!!, 20 May 2003
This review is from: Super Monkey Ball Jnr. (Video Game)
This game will drive you mad and give you vertigo, and you'll keep coming back. I thought the controls would be a problem, but they are really excellent and you learn to master the fine tune and amplify buttons. The camera can be a pain but you do learn to cater for it as you play. The levels are excellent, with perfectly judged target times. The bonus games are good for a laugh, with monkey golf offering a slightly more sedate take on the whole idea.
