Koudelka is unlike any RPG I've ever played. Though the graphics aren't top notch, they're some of the best that I've seen on the PSOne. The voices aren't exactly in sync, but have you played Final Fantasy X, one of the best selling RPGs EVER. The voices are WAAAAYYY off. The voice acting in Koudelka is some of the best I've heard too, the moods and tones fit the characters perfectly. Speaking of the characters, while only three, they have detailed pasts and they're own reasons for being at the setting of the game. And there's none of that cheesy: 'Oh I'm going on a quest. Why don't you come along with me?' 'Alright then. Ho hum.' which is present in quite a few RPGs. The characters start off with uneaseyness with the strangers they are forced to stay with because of the dangers around them. Their relationship's progress throughout the game.
Now for the gameplay. Koudelka takes a long time to play, but I wasn't bored for a single second. The battle system is complex and takes time to get used to which may be frustraiting for some players who like to just pick up a new game and start playing, but that's not what RPGs are all about are they? The monestary in which the game is set is expansive, so it is easy to get lost or miss vital items which will progress the story, but there is always the chance to go back and look, and the random battles aren't annoyingly frequent as they are in some games.
The only problem that I can find with Koudelka is the music. Only four songs are used through out the entire game and these are all battle themes. Two are the final boss' theme so aren't heard until the end. The tracks are good pieces of music but don't fit in too well with the action, but as the battle system isn't the same as regular RPGs it does work. Unfortunately, when exploring the mansion you are left in silence except for the sound of footsteps and the regular eerie noises that can be found in a spooky old building. The lack of music is probably on account of the horror mood they wish to set, but I do like to listen to some music when I'm playing games.
Buy or don't buy. If you're an RPG fan it has an in depth plot line with tradegy, romance, action and an eerie old man, along with a totally new and quite funky battle system. It's definately a buy for you. However, if you're more into wandering around with constant explosions everywhere and cars. Just cars... no need for them to move. I'd recomend it but it might ust not be for you.
