3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as it's predecessors. 31 Mar. 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3|Edition:Standard Edition
I am well aware that I am writing a review which is contrary to popular consensus. However, like Mugatu and his understanding that Zoolander's Blue Steel pose is the same expression as all his others, I appear to be highlighting something that other people can see, but seem resistant to acknowledge.

Dark Souls II is not as good as Dark Souls.

There I said it. Now to provide context to my bold and no doubt unpopular statement.

I am a long-time Souls fan. Back in 2009, when I first booted up an imported copy of the tongue twisting Demon's Souls into my PlayStation 3, I was instantly hooked by the masochistic world, where survival is slim and death is your teacher. I battled my way through Boletaria, learning and adapting, and when I emerged victor, I realised I had loved every gruelling minute. Fast forward to 2011's spiritual successor Dark Souls, and the same adrenalised excitement coupled with fear overcame me as I ventured into the beautifully oppressive world of Lordran. I remember the awe as I clawed my way through the incredible landscape, learning through death, and the overwhelming satisfaction when I finally felled Lord Gywn and claimed victory as the hero (or anti-hero, depending on your choice), that the game hinted I might become. With pure love, I dove straight back into New Game Plus for more punishment.

I wish I could say the same about Dark Souls II. After trudging my way through the game, at the end, all I felt was disappointment and confusion at the muddled mess I had just played. When I went in for New Game Plus, it was more out of a sense of duty than desire.

5.0 out of 5 stars So the world might be mended... 14 Mar. 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3|Edition:Standard Edition
The Souls franchise is by far the best the PS3 has to offer. Legendary status. I got the game early from the US (PS3 is region free so I thought I'd jump in with the NTSC version 4 days early). It brings back memories of importing the original Demons Souls game from Japan before anyone in the west had a clue about this new drug.

It's just glorious. All the best bits of Dark Souls mixed with (surprisingly, and quite unexpectedly) more elements of the original, Demon's Souls. They removed a lot of the frustrating online problems like laggy backstabs and finally, they added dedicated servers. Online is smooth as butter and lag free now which makes for an enormous improvement. There are a bunch of new covenants to try this time around with excellent online features that I don't want to spoil... You can be a sort of 'soul police' that raids the world of other players who have slain noobies, which is just too good. Having a blast with the Blue Sentinels so far.

Anyway, enough of that.. the game itself eh? Did they sell out? did they pay for good reviews? has the series become 'casual'? simple answer: LOLno. The game is just as tough as ever, and thankfully remains true to the series.

Bonfires are back, but now you have ability to fast travel from the start, once you light each bonfire once. Some may say this is making things easier, but the world of this game is so vast compared to the first Dark Souls you can see why it was added - there is no way anyone will want to keep trekking the enormous interconnected map back to Majula (Firelink shrine / Nexus 3.0) every time they want to level up or rest.

Enemies, world and atmosphere are thick and deep as always.

5.0 out of 5 stars BUY NOW! 6 Aug. 2014
By Ro
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3| Edition:Standard Edition|Verified Purchase
New to dark souls.. A little apprehensive with all the dying, thought it might be borderline frustrating. How wrong I was! Every inch gained in this is a small triumph, every fight (and I mean EVERY fight!) is a genuine ass-clencher! Plot is standard (am only half way way through so far) but it's the getting there that it all boils downs to. Cannot recommend this game enough. Depth, beauty and rewarding for those willing emerse themselves. Get it now if you're looking for something new and refreshing in an industry that has unfortunately grown stale!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but slightly disappointing 11 May 2014
By Aaron
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3| Edition:Standard Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed the game. I liked the dual weild aspect and how you had to sacrifice your blocking for it. The only complaints I have are that it's not as hard as the first dark souls was and some of the bosses I found really easy or really hard. Another thing I liked about this game was the fast travel concept between the bonfires.

If your looking for a game that can give you a minor challenge and a bit of fun then this is the game but if your buying it based on how good the first dark souls was then it will be a little bit of a dissapointment.
