Dark Souls, as I'm sure by now you've heard, is hard. Very hard. Right from the tutorial-free opening you're punished relentlessly, and every time you overcome a impossible enemy you can be sure something even more brutal awaits around the next corner. To this end I cannot recommend it to all gamers, especially if you've never played an action-RPG. However, those with patience and determination will find it an immensely rewarding experience.

The game drops you in at the deep end, starting with your character breaking out of an 'Undead Asylum'. Your encounters here initially seem difficult but pale in comparison to what waits for you ahead. Your travels will take you to many varied locations ranging from a castle and its vast grounds to underground swamps, and most of these environments look stunning. Sometimes the visuals can admittedly look a little rough around the edges, but the sheer scope of the game more than makes up for it. Unfortunately the frame rate suffers in larger areas, especially in 'Blighttown' where on more than one occasion it broke down to the point of being unplayable.

Everything takes place in one colossal world where if you can see a location then chances are at some point you can go there. The level design is mostly fantastic and often ingenious, with many of the worlds connecting with eachother to prevent the need for endless backtracking. This also means that one bonfire can sometimes serve as the starting point for several different sections of the game (the Firelink Shrine in particular is one you will be revisiting many times). These bonfires act as Dark Souls' checkpoint system and should you die you will be resurrected at the last one you visited.

5.0 out of 5 stars Praise the Sun 5 Sep 2012

Dark Souls may well be one of my favourite games of all time. It is competing with Super Castlevania 4 on the Snes, Eternal Darkness on the Gamecube and Renegade on the ZX Spectrum to give you an idea of what that means.

The environment is masterfully depicted and memorable for two distinct reasons. Firstly because it is so varied and bleak. Stone castles quickly give way to Tolkienesque caverns and lava pits. And you can go deeper and deeper and never seem to reach the edge of its world. In the beginning you have no idea where anything is or where you are going. There is no map and non player characters are deliberately obtuse and quite often mad. Secondly you really have to remember the levels to progress. Anyone who has played an old school MegaMan will know what this means. I've been killed in the Undead Burg (a very early level) enough times to know the exact location of each enemy. There are two next to the bonfire, one with an axe another with a crossbow, a third that jumps up the stairs, along the bridge there are the firebomb throwers...and so on. Now imagine how daunting a new area is when you know that it was only by committing enemies positions to memory that you made it through the last one? So it is part of the experience to shuffle forward through a new level with your shield at the ready, terrified of your own shadow.

Death has weight in this game. It could mean being sent back miles and the loss of tremendous amount of XP points. If you are careful in Dark Souls you will learn not to die but there is no handholding. To complete Dark Souls you almost have to study it and very much play by its rules. It cannot be overstated how much the sadistic difficultly makes the game a cohesive whole.

5.0 out of 5 stars Developer's will learn from this... 25 Feb 2012

I've played many RPG's in my time ranging from the surreal, the dark, the happy go lucky, and the downright brutal. Let me tell you that Dark Souls is certainly one of the best and most refreshing titles to grace the shop shelves in a long while.

If you're looking for a walk in the park picking daisies, please move on, Dark Souls will punish you and push you to the limits of your skill. Many are saying that it's one of the hardest game's out there, let me comfort you now and say it's not... These people are looking at the game in the wrong way, instead of raging and chewing on your controller after getting stabbed in the back by that enemy for the first time; look, observe and learn from your mistakes, do that and you'll stroll through most of the areas as you feel like a total badass. This is what the developers wanted, to create a game where the players themselves should put it to themselves to accomplish a task, in other words, they were sick of the grinding and monotony of most other rpg's as you flicked enemies on the nose and waltzed over the tops of their heads...

The Gameplay itself is a wonder to behold, the gameplay mechanics and features feel so fluid and dynamic, the seemless actions of all the weapons and moves you make really give you a sense of how much passion and soul has gone into this game, the best thing I think really is that...Just...Everything feels like it works, it's in the right place everytime and should warrant more praise than it's been receiving.

If you're still anxious about buying it, take it from me, you won't regret it! As long as you commit to the game it will treat you well.

10/10! Developers should take note of what this game has managed to achieve...

For the time you put into the game playing through the same combat sequences it can be fun, although it can get frustrating attempting long sessions.
