4.0 out of 5 stars F1 2013 Review! 6 Oct 2013
Platform for Display:Xbox 360|Edition:Standard Edition
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
You will be in one of two camps, those of you that will have never tried/played an F1 game before and those like me that have purchased each of the previous 3 years versions. For those of you that are new to F1 games then go right ahead and purchase this game as it offers lots of content including career, online and the new "classic" mode where you can race with f1 cars from the good old days in the 1980's. In Career you basically start as a rookie for one of the low end teams and you take part in a full season, along the way you will get targets to meet and ideally beat your team mate and become the no.1 driver, you get car upgrades throughout the season and indeed may be offered a contract from another team to move either immediately or at the end of the season. While there are other single player modes the main two other areas are online which includes co-op championship where you can literally team up with a friend in the same team and battle it out for a full season (personally one of my favorite modes). Online you can either join a lobby or set up your own with a variety of settings from track, distance, weather, assists, rules and indeed whether or not you want to qualify or just race. It all works seamlessly and the menus are easy to navigate.

Perhaps the most anticipated area of f1 2013 is the classic mode, although i must warn you that the full classic mode is ONLY included with the full classic edition of the game which was available as a pre-order only. So if you purchase this version (only version available now) it will only come with 1980's content, if you want the full classic content then you can purchase it separately as a DLC.

I'll get it out of the way at the start- Ayrton Senna is not in F1 2013. Whilst it is a disappointment, it was not possible for Codemasters to get Senna into the classic content for the game this year for licencing reasons... and the same goes for classic McLarens too.

Right, now that's out of the way...

F1 2013 is pretty much what you'd expect (if you've played F1 2012)- an evolution over last year's game instead of a wholesale change. The handling is very much the same for the 2013 cars- just a continuation of what worked well last year- and I will say now that if you are new to F1 games, you will find it difficult to start with.

The same game modes are all there- Multiplayer (exactly the same as 2012), Co-Op Championship, Time Trial and Grand Prix mode is back! So you can create a custom season instead of just a single race (as in 2012). Champions Mode has evolved into Scenario Mode- exactly the same principal only there's a lot more challenges- yes, some are quite fun but once you've completed them, you won't bother doing them again.

All the same modes apply in F1 Classics, which is this year's game's big new feature because without it, this is just F1 2012 with a new paint job. It is truly magnificent though! 5 cars from the 1980s from Williams, Ferrari and Lotus and 12 from the 90s (if you have the Classic Edition or extra DLC). 3 from Williams, 3 from Ferrari, including Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill's title-winning cars. In addition, each car has a unique sound, handling and is meticulously recreated. There's also plenty of top drivers although the combinations are a bit odd. For some reason, Jody Scheckter is in a 1999 Ferrari (?). Alain Prost is also in a 1999 Williams and David Coulthard in a 92' Williams.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best yet! 17 Feb 2014
Platform for Display:Xbox 360| Edition:Standard Edition|Verified Purchase
Superb game, clearly outpaces the others. I couldn't wait to try the classics content, the cars are a nightmare to handle but you get the hang of it, Brands Hatch is so easy, yet provides true combative racing as cars can run together across the whole lap, Jerez the home of winter testing is anti- clockwise so can be slightly difficult, a true drivers track with an odd left cornered chicane that can catch you out quite easily! As for the nineties content I have only got the cars for it, the scream of the V10's is annoying but the cars aren't that different to handle then the modern ones (I'm quite partial to the Damon Hill Tital winning Williams).
The modern cars due to the Pirelli tyres wear quite easily, and the fuel can run out before the finish if you are not careful, which brings you closer to being an actual F1 driver, the braking and turning abilities are 1000000% better than 2012, as I had to resort to auto-braking on that game, now on this one I can go back to my Kobayashi style driving. The graphics (if you have a good TV) are brilliant, but the let down is that the after race scenes are the same and is a far cry from the 2010 drivers conference style after race scene, where you could actually see the other drivers faces! Another good addition is the scenario modes for normal and classic, replacing champions mode, these are longer and incorporate different events a driver will have to face in their career.
Overall a nice step up from the occasionally drab 2012 game.
P.S The Australian grand prix is always a right mash up at the start of a season, be it retirements or driver clashes, as the AI now like to fight you and other AI for position!!!
