If you want to play Asteroids, Space Duel, Tempest, Centipede, Missile Command and Battlezone using the SAME ORIGINAL CODING as the arcade games from your youth - then this is the game for you. These 6 games are the reason why you you would buy this collection, (although time probably has not been kind to these games).

Highly customisable - eg screen views can be customised so it looks like the original machine round the outside or just the inside screen; points for bonuses and extra lives can be adjusted.

As it is an Anthology it also contains (probably all of) the early blocky Atari console system games which weren't that great at the time and certainly aren't great now. (If you want to show your own kids the first computer game: Pong, then it is here as well... 2 bats and a ball might not excite them !)

But it is not designed for today's kids, it's taking YOU back again to those arcade games you want to play again: if you do want to play Battlezone again (both joysticks forward, both joysticks back, one joystick forward or back etc) i.e. controlling the caterpillar tracks on either side of the tank)then this is the game for you.

Each game does quickly become repetitive so you won't be playing for hours and hours - these games were designed so you'd only play for a few minutes then put another 10p in the slot.

So put Heaven 17 on the jukebox, balance your pint of beer precariously somewhere, get in the pork scratchings again and... it is almost 1982 again!! (Until they build a time machine this is the closest you're going to get!).

(Just try not to think that this was actually 25 years ago !!!)

I thought this was a good value set with many early & some classic titles such as asteroids, centipede, pong , tempest, missile command and breakout among others. The menu has a retro/asteroid style theme going on with six different catagories. ex- space, adventure, action, casino, sports, classic arcade, racing & home arcade versions. (newsweek times) The games are simple to go between, my favourite being tempest, black widow, major havoc, star raiders & couple of the racing/misc games etc. Although some very aged graphics on some and the "bonus" of each game's early covers being almost impossible to read, i found them quite a challenge. recommended mainly if you like retro or directly enjoyed playing some of these early games.

Hard to use 28 Jan 2010

I grew up with the Atari games and thought I'd love this - but I just didn't. The menu and controls are excessively difficult to use - just getting to your favorite game takes a lot of needless moving around of menus. And the PS2 controls really don't work well with what you have to do to play the games. It makes it just a bit too hard and that takes away the whole point of having fun playing the nostalgia.

This is a great concept with an extremely poor execution.
