I enjoyed this album more than I thought I would. I just love listening to Maura sing but it is the overal sound with the likes of Jerry Douglas on Dobro or Bela Fleck on Banjo that creates the Great atmosphere which I find so appealing. There's none of that here, only voices, which just shows how good Maura really is. I hear many unacompanied singers in folk clubs around the UK and Maura is up there with the best of them. It is quite an achievement to get Jerry Douglas to sing on one of the tracks and he doesn't do a bad job. If you like Maura then you should buy this. It will never be my favourite album from Maura as I will always prefer the voice set against instruments but it is my favourite unacompanied album by anyone.

Maura's voice is amazing and it's great to hear Dolly Parton and Kate Rusby in the mix, all blending together very nicely. Especially loved her version of 'Shipbuilding' - moody, blues-y and soulful with the help of The Settles Connection choir. There are also some very powerful traditional tracks on here which really 'grew' on me after I had initially found them a little too intense - 'Mo Sheamuseen' and 'Anach Cuian'. I played this for friends who would not generally be 'into' a cappella music - and they loved it!

What a great voice but overall the album is disappointing - I just listened to it again after over a year of avoiding the whole session and it drags by on too many of the songs - especially the solos.
I think I bought it on the strength of the 1st track (The Bright Blue Rose) which is stunning but you would have to be an Irish folk purist with a finger in one ear to put up with the whole album.
This woman could rustle together a band of friends to harmonise with (and maybe a couple of instruments) and it would blow you away but I have a feeling she just ain't interested in that kind of recognition - her choice of course but a shame I think.
