Amazon.co.uk Review Review

When 12-year-old muskrat trapper Letty West stumbles on the naked bodies of Jane Warr and Deon Cash, deep in the snowy woods of northern Minnesota, it's more than another bizarre episode in her already unusual life, as Lucas Davenport discovers in this new outing in Sandford's popular series featuring the midwestern lawman who moonlights as a computer game designer.

Lucas has a new wife, a new baby, and a new job as a political troubleshooter for his old boss Rose Marie Roux, but the blunt-spoken Davenport's instructions to hush the racially charged implications of what looks suspiciously like a lynching won't deter him from whoever left Warr and Cash twisting in the wind.

The well-peopled plot, involving a hot car ring, an ex-nun who smuggles cancer drugs over the Canadian border, and the usual internecine wranglings between the FBI, the local cops, and Davenport, races to a satisfying denouement, but this time it's a little girl with a difficult past and an uncertain future who lingers in the reader's mind. Fortunately, Sandford comes up with an ending that makes it all but certain that his fans will meet her again. Meanwhile, all the author's usual trademarks are on display--excellent writing, an interesting scenario, and terrific pacing. --Jane Adams, Amazon.com --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

The chilling new Lucas Davenport novel by the number-one-bestselling author His old boss, Rose Marie Roux, has moved up to the state level and taken Lucas with her, creating a special trouble-shooter job for him for the cases that are too complicated or politically touchy for others to handle. Of course, Lucas is married now, and a new father, all of which is fine with him: he doesn't mind being a family man. But he is a little worried. If there's one thing Lucas Davenport knows, it's that for every bit of peace you get, you have to pay - and he's waiting for the bill. It comes in the form of two people found hanging from a tree, in the woods of northern Minnesota. What makes it particularly sensitive is that the bodies are those of a black man and a white woman, and they're naked. "Lynching" is the word that everybody's trying not to say - but, as Lucas begins to discover, the murders are not, in fact, what they appear to be. Neither are they the end of it. There is worse to come - much, much worse...Filled with rich characterization and exceptional drama that are his hallmarks, this is Sandford's most suspenseful novel yet.

Sadly, when reading John Sandford - particularly the Prey series you become accustomed to excellence adn I felt this one fell a little short of his usual mark.
When two people are found hanging out in the wilds - a black manand a white woman - the media frenzie and shouts of 'lynching' send the politicians into a frenzy. Thats when Lucas and Del are sent in as 'troubleshooters' to sort it out. A very busy book, lots of snapshots of several characters - the majority of whom were not well filled out, even if they were involved up to their neck in everything! Inspite of this the book didn't move at the same pace as his work usually does and didn't have the same 'edge' (perhaps it's coz Lucas is getting on a bit!). the introduction of Lettie, was however, a master stroke. She's a superb character and hopefully we will hear much more about her in the future.
It was worth reading - but I can't help thinking that was as much out of loyalty and character knowlege as anything else. If you haven't read John Sandforb before, start with his earlier stuff, this will not give you the full impact of his usual work.

Sandford at his best 25 July 2004
By Mr. Warren M. Fisher VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
A real return to form from Sandford, indeed this ranks alongside the best of his 'Prey' novels. The plotting is as sure-footed as ever, but it is the characterisation and mood of the book that sets it apart from the run-of-the-mill crime novels.

Lean, thrilling, and furiously readable - few writers can match Sandford and his 'Prey' novels.

Poor Prey 3 Mar 2004
Format:Paperback
The strengths of the previous Prey novels - a great villain, interesting interaction betweeen the main characters, a strong suspenceful plot, sexual interest - are almost entirely missing here. As a result, I was hugely disappointed with this book - I finished it but only just. If you are new to John Sandford, don't start with this one.
