* All human life is here - from the anticipation of arrival in a Metropolis; the hardships of employment and unemployment; the finding and losing of love; and the escapes from reality that can be found `Up On The Roof'. Although many of these songs are set in and around New York, their message is pan-American and could just as easily apply to Chicago, Detroit or any other city where not all the inhabitants found that summertime meant that the living (or the loving) was easy.
* A host of soul music's most revered artists are assembled to tell this story, from Arthur Alexander to Aretha Franklin. Almost all of those who tell it sing from personal experience of having lived it.
* Those who feel a purchase coming on will be pleased to know that more than half of the inclusions are making their CD debut.

There are 2400 songs in the naked city and here's a couple of dozen of them,

What could be a new themed series this one concentrates on songs about New York of which there's enough to do further volumes.
With Ace now having put out 4 Jan Bradley songs out of over 20 she made there seems a strong possibility that it will be Ace who finally issue a Jan anthology seeing as her immediate contemporary Claudine Clark has now been given the CD treatment. In fact Jan Bradley is shown on the customized CD label And in a kind of British Invasion in reverse these CDs of America's own long neglected music have to be obtained by collectors over there as imports! Same as we have to do if we want Lesley Miller of Barbara Chandler product. But back to this one-its nice to see plenty of cover versions and thank God they never included ropey stuff like New York New York

Ace Records (the Kent label in this case) is the best place to start when one wants to purchase great under-rated American music. This collection of songs about urban life, mostly from the 60s, is one of the finest compilations that this label has available.
