5.0 out of 5 stars This is NOT classical music, 26 Oct 2003
This review is from: Naked City (Audio CD)
Why is this in the classical music section?? This is classical in the same way that Britney Spears is thrash metal! John Zorn, for those who don't know, is an avant-garde jazz musician who destroys as much as he creates. His music follows no boundaries and is like nothing else you have ever heard. He is one of Mike Pattons chief influences and that explains whay at some points this album sounds like Patton's Mr Bungle playing a mixture of their trademark 'crazy metal' with elements of free form jazz and surf music. Put simply, this album is stunning! Recommended to anyone who likes adventurous, groundbreaking, imaginative music.

..this is so funny yet so talented its beyond comprehension! a jazz band that combines extreme metal! yes bands have tried to do ths before and failed miserably, naked city manage o get away with it. mellow, chilled out, funky, technical, in your face grindcore, the inflences go on and on. excellent. by the way, avoid the other albums cause they are ambient etc, not at all like this. i made the mistake of buying the box set and the other discs are rubbish, just buy this one on its own - unless you like that sort of thing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hold on a minute, 5 Nov 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Naked City (Audio CD)
John Zorn is usually lumped into the jazz music category, solely due most of the time to the fact that he is a saxophonist and occasionally plays what some would describe as jazz. However, this album can only very loosely be described as jazz music. This album is an assemblage of 26 little musical vignettes which although related in style often jump from one to another abruptly and unexpectedly. Scattered about this collection are a variety of familiar sountrack exerpts all given a characteristic treatment by the band. The music is often very aggressive, with short bouts of saxophone shrieking and wailing, distorted guitar flurries and unusual, rhythmic vocal outbursts. These sections are often followed abruptly by gentle, melodic parts which really contrast very strongly. All in all it is an unusual listening experience and a strange blend between conventional melodic music parts and avant-garde atonal excess. There are some truly beatiful tracks here such as 'The Sicilian Clan' and a really great take on 'Contempt'and the theme track from 'Chinatown'. No doubt you will find Batman and James Bond amusing but at the end of it all you may feel that the whole thing needed a little more coherence.
