Reviews

Naked Boys Singing! The title says it all! Caution - and costumes - are thrown to the wind in this musical revue featuring an original score and a handful of hunks displaying their special charms as they celebrate the splendors of male nudity in comedy, song and dance. Naked Boys Singing! went 'full-frontal' at Los Angeles' Celebration Theatre in 1998. Since it's raucous debut the revealing review has dropped its drawers for eager audiences around the world.

Ok so this isn't doesn't exactly have the highest production values but it definitely one of the most fun and original musicals I've ever seen. The naked novelty does wear off fairly soon into proceedings but when you've got a cast this hot prancing about the stage in their birthday suits you can be sure that your attention never drifts! Many of the songs are hilarious with, great, catchy melodies and all of the performers really are at the top of their game. Don't go expecting too much and you're sure to enjoy this hilariously innovative musical!

On one level, this is "cute" - lots of very pretty men, mostly undressed, good voyer material. And the show itself does attempt to put many issues facing gay men into the arena, in an often quite humourous way: how guys will eye each other up (and compete!) in the gymn, the longing for an intimate connection, even a perky little pornstar from Illonois. The main gripe is that filming a live show, no matter how fancy the camera work, doesn't quite have the impact of seeing it in the flesh (no pun intended). The music etc is very "typical broadway show" style and somewhat predicatable: I was debating if it deserved a two star rating rather than three, but it does give a few laughs and is quite entertaining, even it it doesn't quite get there in the end.

This show is exactly 'what it says on the tin'. It's a group of attractive guys, all of whom can sing and dance well, singing a collection of well written, witty songs, in the buff. It's great to see a show that is essentially old fashioned cabaret albeit naked cabaret having such success. The songs range from more 'serious' ballads through to very witty ditties such as 'The Bliss of the Bris' and 'I'm a Perky Little Porn Star'.

My reservation with this disc is the serious lip sync issue. Whether this is due to the soundtrack being recorded separately to the image or just bad craftsmanship, the problem is distracting. Since the performances are really rather good it's a shame that they have not been put to disc in a more successful manner.

In conclusion, this is a great fun show that can't fail to amuse but a disc that will disappoint to some degree due to the technical issues mentioned.

It is exactly what it says on the box. The novelty of the nakedness wears off within minutes, the songs are a broadway homosexual journey. worth a watch

Unlike the other reviewers I thoroughly enjoyed this.

The songs were catchy & quite poignant to gay culture. The men are highly attractive & it kept me entertained throughout. Even though it was filmed live it was still done to a good standard.

I've watched it a few times now & i'm sure you will to. Give it a try.

I admit I was tempted by the title. Naked boys! And they sing! Well...After 10 minutes I realized that I was not the target audience of this film.
First and foremost the eye catcher of this title, the naked boys, wears off quickly...Unless you are a desperate, who hasn't seen a naked man for a while.
Otherwise, the view of 10 men jumping naked on a stage becomes slightly idiotic after two or three songs (and I think it was the last thing the director had in mind).

What's more...It is a musical (kind of), so there are no spoken dialogues, thus the film is really hard to digest (if you are not a fan of this kind of movies).

I give the second star for the song about a naked maid :)

Unfortunately as I hail from South Africa where such productions are a scarcity, I would never have the opportunity of watching this particular production live, and thus must settle for the recording. Having said that I enjoyed "Naked Boys Singing" for the humorous frivolity it is.

Of course the novelty of men singing naked wears off quite quickly, and you end up listening to the songs for what they are, many of which a clever social commentaries. I particularly enjoyed the "Bliss of Briss" on male circumcision and its celebration amongst the Jewish community. The issues are therefore, current and the delivery is humorous.

Of course I find it disturbing that an issue is made of 'nakedness' as opposed to the narrow minded conservatism that dictates normative society.....but that's just me. I am told that I often make things far more serious than they are....who knows.

The DVD was fun, and whilst not brilliant when compared to the productions of 'Billy Elliot', 'Spring Awakenings' and 'Rent', it is worth the watch. "Naked Boys Singing" is not meant to be in the same category or genre as the stage productions I have mentioned, and should be enjoyed for the sake of light entertainment and nothing more. It was fun, and the special features commentary on the making of the DVD was relevant and interesting.
