Alejandro Navarro Vasquez the Conde Olivares is a wealthy Spanish aristocrat, a successful business man and known to excel in every field of his endeavour but his achievements had been marred by the failure of his marriage, a marriage that had ripped his family apart. Divorce or separation was not a word that existed in their family vocabulary. It has been two years since his wife Jemima walked out on their marriage and disappeared without a trace. He believed she had betrayed him with his brother so his heart was still filled with anger, outrage and vengeance two years on. You can imagine his delight when his PI informed him that he had located Jemima in a little English village Chalbury St Helens. However nothing prepared him for the added information that his wife now had a two year old son. As far as he knew his wife had miscarried before she left him. His desire for revenge was now reaching untold heights.

Jemima had a raw deal as a child with two parents akin to the parents from hell. With the death of her mother she had cut ties with her abusive and violent father so she had no family. Her self esteem and self belief had always been low. So when she found herself, being courted and swept off her feet into marriage with the tycoon aristocrat she thought it was surreal. However her insecurities and belief that she was not good enough for Alejandro, coupled with the hostility from some of his relatives, meant that when the going got tough she bolted without a trace when she couldn't take any more. She believed that she had lost her baby in a miscarriage. By some miracle she was still pregnant; she probably lost one twin, and gave birth to a beautiful baby boy alone. From nothing she had built a successful life for herself and her son and now owned a thriving florist shop..It is in this charming village that Alejandro found her and to his chagrin he found out that the little boy was his. The solution was simple she will come home as his wife so that they can both raise their son or he will fight her for custody.

The storyline was very predictable and one that has been done so many times by M& B authors. Usually LG is able to weave such simple storylines with intrigue, suspense and originality, that makes for the compelling page turner we have come to expect from LG. However this story lacked that gripping and spellbinding characteristic of LG books and was often tiresome. It is supposed to be the first in a new trilogy `Secretly pregnant ` Let us hope the remaining two - Flora's Defiance and Jess's promise will be better This is definitely not one of her best, but readable nonetheless.

It is a bit much for us to believe that Jemima couldn't tell her husband her 'secret' especially when it was blackmailing her. Alejandro is a powerful man and can squash people like I can squash a bug so he could have totally handled her 'secret'.

I didn't like it that Alejandro only believed Jemima didn't cheat on him with his brother because he found out his brother is gay and not because he trusted Jemima. Seems making brother gay was the 'easy' way out for writer. And BTW, just because he is gay doesn't mean they couldn't have had sex. Bro could have been confused or whatever.

Even when Alejandro thought Jemima had cheated, he still said they could work things out so I was disappointed that Jemima chose to leave rather than do so.

Last two plot points dropped my rating one star.

I really don't understand the bad reviews of this book. Due to being totally skint I couldn't buy it before Xmas so I've only just got hold of a copy but I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I thought the heroine's character was well developed and she came across as someone who was finally able to stand up for herself after a lifetime of believing herself to be second best. I also thought the hero had more depth and the whole story was well structured and beautifully written. Yes, the story line has been done before but then that's true of every Mills and Boon ever published. That's why we read them, we know what we're getting. To say that the story is cliched and seen/read/done before is ridiculous. Its a Mills and Boon, they all have the same plot and always will have the same plot. You'll never going to buy one and discover it's a horror/thriller/detective story or anything other than a straight forward romance.
Lynne excels because she's good at writing characters that appeal. In this story, the heroine has overcome an abusive childhood and made her own way in the world. She's grown in self esteem and it gives her the courage to make her marriage work. Her husband however, has to learn that he's not the omnipotent be all and end all that he thought he was. He's made mistakes and has to live with them. He's not perfect and both characters have to accept the other for what they are. I think a lot of thought went into this book and it shows. I'm looking forward to the next two books and won't be disappointed if they are as entertaining as this one.
