Ordnance Survey Landranger maps are superbly adapted for those wishing to drive and walk an area in the British Isles. At a 1:50,000 scale, the multi-colored presentation provides excellent details of terrain, roads, and physical structures. Map #27 covers the area along the Moray Firth in the Scottish Highlands between Forres and the Culloden Battlefield, east of Inverness.
This particular area of Scotland has surprisingly much to recommend itself to the visitor. The seaside town of Nairn, in the center of the area covered by the map, is a former fishing village now given over to tourism and featuring an excellent local museum. Cawdor Castle of MacBeth fame has a classic interior and marvellous garden. Fort George on the Moray Firth features a fine regimental museum and magnificent views of the Firth. Culloden Moor has haunting memories of the battle that ended the 1745 uprising of "Bonnie Prince Charlie" and a brand-new museum on site.
Also included on this mapsheet is the eastern tip of the Black Isle, with its fine farms and the old maritime town of Cromarty. Literary buffs may wish to visit Daviot, where the adventure writer and Scots native Alastair MacLean was raised. Those willing to follow a backroad through sheep country can visit Lochinorb, which holds an island with the ruined remains of a Clan Cumming stronghold.
Ordnance Survey Landranger # 27 is very highly recommended to those who plan to explore, whether by automobile or on foot, an interesting corner of the Scottish Highlands.
