Amazing album 19 Mar 2011
By Tim H
Format:Audio CD
This is a brilliant album, and I dont agree with the 4 stars, or the 3 stars. Whilst this is different, doesn't mean it's bad; he cant stick to just brazillian music all the time. I love the whole album; Nahoo Nation is an amazing track, the beat is amazing juggling sounds from the early nahoo albums, and some new styles which works so well :) Independent Blues is amazing song and talks about someone who was born in the highlands and either had to be moved away from his home; this is increbible. The Keening is very scottish sounding and has a folkish aspect whilst still maintaining the Brazillian sounds that has made Paul popular, this album doesn't rely so much on the samples but more on the song. Notes from the Rebublic, the title track speaks about independace of Scotland; it;s very powerful in the production but it so scottish with the fiddles that makes me think why this album got the slack? Unfinish Businness I think it talks about the language that it got popular, and peopleare still keeping it alive which I think it's popular when at a time the Gaelic language was at one time was gonna be extinct and it means we still got a long way to go before Gaelic will be accepted. Don Roberto's Sabbath is amazing songs when the drums start; not sure what this one is about but perhaps to do with the sabbath to have a good time but im not sure on that. Night Falls reminds me of Red River from Nahoo 2, a amazing instrumental that brings chills to your bones; if this doesn't move you; then something is seriously wrong with you. Mad Liitany speaks about a poem in Latin about christians and about the langauge of going to the angels; amazing song ;) Carver Angus With Bites I think is mismash like a flashbacks from nahoo albums that hows they come far. First Time Ever I saw your face, Paul makes a jazzy song and gives it some oompth, sort of jazzy but adding a new feel to a song thats been covered so many times; this is a a amazing version. Reel Slow is traditional, Paul slows it down but adds his own stamp but never losing the reel which is often the case in some traditional songs that been modernised. Taking Leave or Bhuam Soraidh Bhuam) starts with the sample, but builds in rhythm and 2 minutes in it's amazing new age instrumental which is amazing then when the song rejoins, it brings it to amazing conclusion. Fiunary is an amazing instrumental, sorta like Nahoo 2, but the the faint drums that builds up; I think this tune goes somewhere; I can imagine imagine in a battle; this will be perfect piece to charge to your enemies; sort of reminds me of the keyboard stuff from Nahoo/Nahoo 2, the gurgling reminds me of one track from Nahoo 1. Thisfinishes with Last Thoughts, a song that brings Nahoo to a close, reflecting from old albums and going to a new thing but buy this album. Even if it costs a bit; you wont regret it.

A good album with new sounds, not sometimes what you get from a continuation album on a theme (e.g. Most tubular bells discs are similar in a lot of ways). This is not as good as Nahoo Too but is a very playable album and moves away from the "run of the mill" music found around these days. I only discovered Paul Mounsey a couple of years ago and now have most of his albums including the Runrig album Proterra where his influence is evident on the sound. If you want some different music, try this and others by Paul and see what you think, I think you will like it.

This CD is in the style of Paul Mounsey - obviously - so you know what to expect: scottish folk merged with modern soundtrack quality music - evocative, etheral, powerful.... but this isn't his best album. If you're new to Paul Mounsey, go for Nahoo Too or City of Walls. There are some good tracks on this CD, but it's not his best work.
