This record was a long time coming - a good 10 years without any solo recordings. It is a storming set and well worth the wait. He has matured and is more measured on a few tracks, and plays with a calmer depth than his earlier tear-away days. But there're plenty of fireworks too - the opening Jenny's Welcome/Craigs Pipes is pure excitement, and the final track (including a magificent Rakish Paddy) makes me feel that everything that happened in Irish Music since the Bothy Band folded in 1979 is just filling in time, waiting for Paddy's return. This record is varied, crisp, and more direct than his follow-up "The Long Grazing Acre". Every track is a gem which can be enjoyed as pure music, or examined for tricks and techniques to use in your own playing.
