I am currently training to become a Teaching Assistant and I wouldn't be able to complete the course without this book. It is informative, well written and absolutely necessary to anyone embarking on a course involving the teaching of, caring for and working with children.

I DIDN'T THINK THIS BOOK WOULD BE NEEDED THAT MUCH FOR MY COURSE BUT I ORDERED IT ANYWAY AS OUR TUTOR SAID IT WOULD BE WORTH IT.WHEN IT CAME IN THE POST I HAD A QUICK LOOK THROUGH IT AND IT WAS REALLY GOOD.SOME OF THE WRITTEN COURSEWORK THAT I HAVE TO DO IS OK AND I KNOW WHAT TO WRITE MOST OF THE TIME BUT WHEN YOU GET STUCK OR YOU JUST NEED TO ADD TO WHAT YOU HAVE ALREADY WRITTEN IT REALLY HELPS.I FEEL I WOULD BE STRUGGLING ALOT WITHOUT THIS BOOK SO IF YOU ARE ON A TEACHING ASSISTANT'S COURSE MAKE SURE YOU BUY THE BOOK IT WILL BE INVALUBLE TO YOU!

This book is probably great if you're doing your NVQ2 from a primary school; but for secondary TAs, the relevance diminishes considerably. We're dealing with kids going through puberty, often taller than we are, who speak a teen language all of their own. While the TA is learning strategies for dealing with their SEN, they are inventing strategies for getting out of class so they can use their mobile phones or grab a quick cigarette. One task in particular, asked the TA to talk about communication through play in the playground. The book failed completely to acknowledge how different social time is in a secondary school; or the fact that secondary TAs frequently work with a number of teachers with classes across all age groups; and I, for instance, work only in science, and struggled to fulfil the literacy elements of the course as set out. The book covers the basic psychology theories as they relate to children, and this sort of thing is applicable across the board. But for almost every chapter, the secondary school info seemed to be a quick add-on, and would be much better dealt with as a separate book - or even a separate NVQ. Having said all that - if this is the set book for your course, you're going to have to buy it anyway!

This book is excellent!! It's well laid out in the units you will be studying, so it is very quick to find relevant information and very easy to use. It has been a life saver for completing my NVQ course. If you are doing this course, then this is the book to buy, it covers it all!!!
