Previously had a Zyxel 210 and was satisfied with it except for the LAN speed, which was not necessarily up to date with about 14-17 MB / s, so I've looked at many new devices. I simply moved my drives from my old Zyxel 210 into the Zyxel 310 and the LAN speed allowed me to achieve 34 MB/s. This was made possible by the increased speed of the processor (now 1.2GHz) and memory (now doubled to 256MB).

I've removed the old drive from the 210 and incorporated into the 310. All data was retrieved, only the personal shares had to be partially created to match that of the previous device (instructions can be found using Google search).

Here are some features:
- Groups, user permissions and Share
- E-Mail Service warnings, etc.
- System status display all relevant parameters (memory, processor, disk space, etc.)
- Access via FTP, HTTP, Samba, SSL, NFS, media server, I-tunes, etc.
- Power Management (panels shut down and / or NAS on schedule)
- Various backup functions
- E-Sata port
- A type of RAID1 level in connecting another external e-SATA storage device
- 2 x USB connectors for drives, disks, cameras, etc. ..
- Print Server Function
- DLNA 1.5 and built-in iTunes Server
- BitTorrent client with auto download
- Media Server function (with some restrictions, but basically functional)
- Flickr Youtube
- Possible to upload / download - via http
- Package Manager, etc., etc.
- Copy / Sync button

With regards to the Package Manager in the NAS, you can add other applications. Such as DynDNS, syslog, TFTP, Emule client and much more is possible. If you use another NAS, you can also download the backup package. Thus, the NAS can synchronize to the other completely.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS THE REVIEW FOR ZyXEL NSA310 1-Bay Network Storage NAS Closure

My Nephew wanted a basic entry-level NAS and we thought this would be an ideal unit. On first looking at the NAS it almost looks like an external hard drive, but this not the case as it has a network connection. So this can connected it to your network and you are to access it from different computers, and even from devices outside of your home network. This NAS runs on a 1 GHz Marvell 88F6192 chip, which is a somewhat older ARMv5 single-core controller. On the enclosure side of things, it feels fairly robust and fits a single 3.5-inch hard drive. Installing the hard disk is fairly easy; you open the case with the large screw in the bottom of the front. You unscrew it and remove the front, then slide in the disk. You just have to make sure it's in the right position so that the disk connects properly. It takes a little effort. The only other hardware related point is that the fan can be a tad noisy, and there is no way to regulate its function.

The Zyxel NSA310 has a USB 2.0 port in the front and back. You can use these to share a printer or to plug in a camera to copy photos to the NAS. You can use the included Zyxel Starter Utility for the software installation. NAS has a number features, one of them is Broadcatching feature is very useful, it lets the NAS download files that are made available as RSS feeds, such as Podcasts. It's a way of automatically getting the latest TV or radio program you follow. The Zyxel NSA310 isn't extremely fast, but they're sufficient at this price point, and fine if you're not overly demanding. This device is not the best option if you need a back-up solution. Over all the performance is good enough if you're not too demanding.

This is a nice piece of kit at a good price. Simple to setup, quiet in operation. Bought it to replace a Go-Flex NAS device that stopped working. So far all good. Much faster than the Go-Flex and more reliable.

This was an amazing find, ticks all the boxes! Stream iTunes to apple tv2, movies etc to my xbox 360 and iphone (using ace player).

I have an MTD 1.5tb hdd and a 320gb usb drive for important backups. I also have the option to install an esata hdd so I can configure to raid1.

All this plus an ace price point! (dont waste your time with the 2tb option - way over priced - buy them separately and you'll save a packet!)

Marked down one star because the instructions only tell you the basic set up - you'll have to play around with it to get the most out of this item.

I had no gripes with this item per se, only that I was expecting to be able to plug in my IDE drive, but it will only accept SATA drives. As I did not want to purchase a SATA drive I returned the item for a refund, which the vendor returned with no fuss. Credit to them for this.

Very good device, works like a charm, easy to configure, pretty good GUI and web interface.

I am using it as an FTP storage device for uploading images from a surveillance cam.
Can easily stream media from your local network, haven't tried it from over the internet, but I guess it would be limited by the connections bandwidth.
