4.0 out of 5 stars DP continues to excell well past their "shelf life". 25 Mar 2014

Given all the drama and personnel changes, DP should have been a memory a couple of decades ago. But the band soldiers on, and the results are impressive. Last year, they released their best record in, at least, 15 years, "Now What ?I". Here, we get to hear their live show on the ensuing tour. The band throws down like guys half their age, and gives no quarter to their critics. I'm almost as old as they are, and am also a musician. I know what touring is like and how it affects older players. These guys flat deliver a live show with energy to spare. The only reason I give them 4 stars instead of 5 is song selection. I could have used more material from "Now What ?! " instead of some of the more shop-worn selections. But I understand why they feel compelled to offer the older songs, and they acquit themselves quite well on them. This is quality rock n' roll and I'm glad they're still making it, lo, these many years after younger bands would have called it a day.
4.0 out of 5 stars They still got it... 13 Jun 2014

Deep Purple circa 2013 is not the Deep Purple circa 1973. And that's a good thing. They were good in 1973 when I first heard Pictures of Home from Machine Head. Good when Burn with David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes was released. There was fire and a desire to prove themselves to really be the greatest rock band in the world. Especially in the live setting. Flash forward 40 years (I know...hard to do) Steve replaced the retired Ritchie and Don stepped in to provide the magic keyboard for the world when Jon retired. We still have 5 talented musicians whose whole is better than the parts. This recent live bit, recorded on tour supporting ?! shows that the band still has the ineffable "thing a ma jig" that makes any band special. Gears spin, instincts project, a shrug of a shoulder, a tilt of the head and a kick of the heel means something to musicians who know how to musich...and, this is the important part, trust their partners to be there, to do their job, to respect the audience, and to trust their own instincts. That is what Deep Purple does. They are a jazz band who play hard rock. None has ever done it better. So glad to hear 4 tracks from the new album represented here. They still know how to write. They still know how to play and stretch. For that, we are the lucky ones. We get to hear the magic.
