Product Description

Product Description

Originally released in 1989 on the Island record label, 'No Respect' is the debut album from this California quintet originally from the Bay area of San Francisco. The band consisted of Davy Vain on vocals, Danny West and James Scott on guitars, Ashley Mitchell on bass and Tom Rickard on drums. Produced by Paul Northfield, assisted by Davy Vain. Vain, along with Jetboy and the Sea Hags, helped solidify the San Francisco metal scene - contempories included Metallica, Exodus and Death Angel (who Davy Vain produced). Songs such as 'Secrets', 'Who's Watching You' and 'Ready' really rock, and 'No Respect' is one of the best and most underrated albums of the 80's. They had the look and sounded great - they should have been world-famous! Sleevenotes by Ian Callaghan, producer of Mark Radcliffe's show and Bruce Dickinson's "Masters Of Rock" on BBC Radio 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sleazey, dirty rock n' roll 29 Mar 2005
Format:Audio CD
I have been listening to this album for 15 1/2 years since it came out in '89 and have had to make do with my crackly vinyl copy as CD copies of this were like gold dust.
This is such a dark, sleazey album and compared to what sold in '89, especially in states where these things matter - Poison, Winger etc it is easy to see why this did not do so well. This is not an album of party anthems. This is an adult exploration of love, life and relationships (often in it's more seedy forms) compared to the more adolescent sexual innuendoes and party rock of Warrant and their ilk. Also unlike many of their peers this is an album about sex rather than sexist party songs.
I think the production is superb and the guitar is peerless in 80's sleaze rock. I think that unlike many of it's contemporaries this album stands up well to the passage of years as it is not so obviously of it's time. In fact the only complaint I ever had was that this album had a terrible cover.
This is in my top five albums of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Glam Rock Masterpiece 26 Sep 2003
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is the most amazing piece of glam rock you will ever hear and is an absolute must buy for all glamsters! Davey Vain's voice is so sultry you can almost hear him pouting.
From the pop like catchiness of 'Watching You' to the sleezy grinding guitars of '1000 degrees' there is not a bad song on this glitter encrusted jewel of glam. Buy it & love it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Return of Hard Rock 31 Mar 2006
Format:Audio CD
What an album! I can't believe I've waited so long to obtain it on CD after first hearing the album in late 80's.
From the opening salvo of Secrets and Beat The Bullet to the closing duo of Without You(which is sentimental but DEFINATELY rocks!) and Ready, this album hits the mark literally!
I would urge any self respecting Hard Rock freak to go and get this album!
I may have to purchase another copy as I've nearly worn mine out from playing it so much

I bought my original Island Records CD back in 1989, and it's currently the most played CD in my car's autochanger.

20 years later, it's songs are STRONG, not one single filler here, they all rip. The vocals and all the production are spot on. Davy Vain was the unluckiest guy alive not to sell 20 million copies with this record. No thanks to Island Records giving up on it after six months, but Davy Vain is still writing music whilst island's A & R guy I'm guessing will be divorced trying to feed his ex wife, 2.2 kids, 0.3 of a dog, and 0.2 of a cat.

Highlights if I'm forced to choose some are Secrets, Beat the Bullet and the title track, No Respect. Can't really think of a stronger record to come out at the time. . . . .

Enjoy, 'cos its wondeful.

5.0 out of 5 stars The lost classic returns 25 Nov 2004
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
First released in 1989 on Island records No Respect was the long awaited album from San Francisco`s Vain. The band had been around for a few years, plugging themselves with several Demo`s and many sold out gigs around the bay area. Really this album was a little late, if it had been released a couple of years before it would have sold millions on the tidal wave that was 80`s hair metal, however as we know grunge came along in 1990 and killed the real rock scene, but hey Kurt Cobain is gone and this CD is back! so bottom line is if you missed it first time buy this NOW. just for the record Kerrang voted it in the top twenty albums of 89 and in the top five glam albums ever this year.
