Just to be clear, I am a past student of the Awaken School in Stokesley, North Yorksire, UK and as such my review is bound to be prejudiced by my extensive experience of Lisa's perspectives on Neuro Linguistic Programming. And this review is intended to be as objective as possible given that context.
As a Master Practioner of NLP I have bought and read most of the 'standard' NLP texts and would rate them as between fair and excellent, and this book is certainly up with the 'excellent' few.
The first paragraph in the introduction sets out Lisa's intentions: providing a good grounding for people new to NLP who may be considering formal NLP training and also for NLP practitioners who want to underpin their existing knowledge with an evidence base for the approach, components and applications of NLP.
And this book does deliver on these intentions.
The first couple of chapters sets out the background and basic principles that underpin NLP - no mean feat in 24 pages. She illustrates the narrative on NLP pressuppositions with real-world examples that provide a practical insight for the new-comer to NLP and re-affirm or re-frame the experience of more seasoned practitioner. As a student of Lisa's there are no surprises here for me, but no doubt others who haven't experienced Lisa's perspective will find some new nuggets of knowledge.
The real beauty of this book is in the structure of chapters Three to Eleven. Each follows a similar format. For each subject area of Goal Setting, Understanding other People, Viewing things from alternative Perspectives, Changing the pictures, Sounds and Feelings of how we think, Change Management,Language of NLP,Presenting Information, Motivating and Influencing, and Performance Excellence the chapters set out and very clearly the rationale, evidence base, principles and application of each area and, perhaps most usefully, introduces practical excercises that collectively form a resource bank for use in a range of contexts.
The final chapter provides a clear discourse on the practical application of NLP in a range of contexts including Coaching,Business, Education, Therapy, Sports and Health Care.
So, if you are new to NLP and are looking for a book that wil give you a good feel for the full range of NLP concepts, tools and applications in an easy to read format that combines a summary of academic and professional knowlege with practical examples and useful practice tips, get hold of a copy of this book. And if you are, like me, an existing NLP practioner you may find new perspectives on previous knowledge and perhaps just genuinely enjoy a fluently written narrative from one of the leading expert practioners in our field.
Get it. Read it. Enjoy! I did...
